I don't have either of the models you are comparing but the E7450 is probably around 0.6kg (may be more) lighter than the E6420 based on (i) the weight of an E6410 with 9 cell battery being 2.4kg and the E7440 with 4 cell battery being 1.7kg.

Comparing quad core and dual core CPU performance depends on whether the workload uses all the cores. If so, then dual core will be noticeably slower. You can check the CPU usage on your E6420 when running the simulations. You can also use the notebookcheck mobile CPU benchmark list to compare performance under different conditions. If you do need quad core performance then you need a size bigger notebook. The Precision M3800 will be lighter than the E6420 and packs a lot of power.

This aspect also interests me. While my E7440's fan is by no means the noisiest fan I have encountered, under sustained full load it reaches a speed where it seems to be running inefficiently and most of the effort seems to be converted into noise.

It would be helpful if you can run wPrime 1024 and see how the CPU noise is after 10 minutes or so of full CPU load.

Hey guys, I am considering purchasing the e7450 and I am wondering whether I should wait for the dedicated graphics option? Is the Intel HD 5500 able to drive the same number of external monitors and at the same resolutions as the nVidia 840M? Is the Optimus graphics switching technology subject to being finicky? I seem to recall there have been issues with it not working properly in the past or introducing a layer of complexity that having solely integrated graphics would avoid.

I don't really play games and even when I do it's something not very demanding like Hearthstone. That said, I have a Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus with 3200x1800 resolution and I feel like at times it struggles to run Office 2013 and Firefox perfectly fluidly due to the high res and the integrated graphics. The e7450 will run at lower FHD and also have a bit better HD 5500, so maybe that will solve the issue.

I just got my E7450 - integrated graphics and 512GB SSD. Very pleased with it overall. Wanting more storage and, alas, that 2242 PCIe SSD card is elusive. Hence the Question: anyone know of any issues if I use a 256GB (or spring high $ for a 512GB) Flash SD card to go into the SD card slot and act as an extra drive? Only SanDisk makes the 512GB but it's a steep price at $599 on Amazon. The 256GB SD card from SanDisk is $299 but the same performance from PNY is $89.
Advise on workability of these SD cards as storage devices? (they spec. read speeds of 90MB/s, write 60MB/s) -- Thanks in advance!

Update, I just received my E7450 with Discrete graphics card and touchscreen. The laptop is absolutely perferct except for the screen brightness. Its way to dim for my liking. Definitely won't be able to see it in the sunlight. I compare this to my old D630 latitude in brightness. The clarity is excellent and so is the rest of the laptop.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Can someone tell me whether 1080p "anti-finger" touchscreen on this laptop is reflective or anti-glare?

Yesterday (actually first time since a week or 2) the fan started to make noise due to the fact i was hammering the processor for a longer time. It was indeed a bit high pit noise but i won't consider it 'loud'.

Also when i stopped the task what actually causing the high cpu load the fan spun down almost instantly.

From my perspective i would say this is complete normal behavior.

Compared to my E6520 the brightness is good, when on battery i use only 70% screen brightness and it does not annoy me (E6520 was set to full, always).

However i do hate the glare that comes with the touch screen, there is a lot of natural light in my office and that negatively impacts the visibility and for me the clarity of the screen. In the office i use a power socket with 100% brightness, but during noon i'm feeling about to close the blinds....

Thought anti-reflective, the trade off i had to make when selecting my touch option...

    Thank you.

The E7440 also seems to have a duration over a threshold built into the fan rules probably because frequent changes in fan speed are more noticeable. On my E7440 it's the fastest speed that is particularly noticeable (and doesn't achieve much reduction in temperature).
