That's good news about the bloatware. I think our order indicated there would be trials for MS Office and McAfee Security Center installed, so I will probably remove those at the very least.

Ours are also shipping with Win 7 Pro (and Win 8 install media) - did you specifically request that yours come with 8, or did you do a clean install?

I believe the plan is for these to mostly run TinkerCAD or 123 Design-level CAD software, but being able to run SolidWorks is nice to have (when we are on-site with our network license server).

The build quality sounds a little concerning. I'll have to wait and see what they look like tomorrow, I guess.

    Thanks for the info.!

I've only unpacked one so far, but the build quality seems ok to me (besides one place along the left side of the body where there was a small gap until I pressed on it and got the snap to engage properly). It's not a precision, but I think it should stand up ok to some use.

One thing to remember with most of these that we purchase from eBay is that they are refurbs. Although this is not a bad thing we should definitely be taking advantage of the on-site warranties that these come with.

You should still have a warranty of some sort through them.

Yes, one year. But apart from the one piece I snapped together to get rid of a gap, they all seem well built with no issues so far.

@alex nice. Let us know how they run for your company.

Also I am considering taking Ubuntu off this and putting Windows 8.1 back on. The Opengl platform is no where as powerful currently as what windows has to offer. I am getting half the frames in DOTA 2 in Ubuntu as I am in Windows.

So far, so good - the additive manufacturing class went well, and I got no complaints. I don't know how much they stressed the machines, with some basic CAD (spaceclaim) and prepping files for 3D printing. I have to say that the card reader being located front and center is handy, since the printer runs off a micro SD card.

And FWIW, you can use 10 of the same logitech wireless mice at the same time without any interference - we weren't 100% sure that would work.

Awesome! Yeah I didn't think that this laptop would dissappoint in the 3D application side of things. I am sure once the folks start doing things like Solidworks and get into super detailed drawings then things would get rough.

On that side note how is this laptop working out for the rest of the folks in this thread? Are you guys thinking this thing will last you the 3-4 year range as far as durability goes? I am sure performance wise this thing is going to fall behind but there isn't much else we can do to improve that other than adding the higher speced RAM in.

Also am I the only one here that is running linux on this thing? This is my OS of choice but I am seriously missing the added gaming performance that you get when you run WIndows with the 8850m/ R9 M265x.

I'm running Ubuntu only - the 3540 makes a great linux machine. Especially since I was able to get the 375 deal from the outlet a while back for the 1080p screen, 4200 CPU, AMD 8850m GPU. Using mine for programming and some gaming under WINE. Mine is holding up well, no overheating issues etc.
