Kaby Lake Precision pre-release discussion (5520 / 7520 / 7720)

Another question, I see two fans and two heatpipes and two radiators, those are for CPU+GPU. What about models without dedicated GPU? Is CPU cooled by two fans+heatpipes? Is it effective?

 

The 7720 and 7520 all came with dGPU. It wasn't until latest gen 7x30 where you can order the precision without a dGPU.

Yes, you were able to configure Intel graphics only with the 7X20. This might not have been an option right at launch? Anyway, I'm not sure about the cooling solution. It appears that the 7X30 has a different cooling solution depending on whether you get a dGPU or not, and the no-dGPU version has basically two heat pipes off of the CPU, one going to each fan. I would bet that the 7X20 is the same. Because very few users order one with no dGPU, I haven't seen any details about this.

Small question: Does the Dell Precision 7520 support 9.5mm high 2.5" SATA drives, or only 7mm high?

 

9.5mm drives work, but no taller than that.

 

Great. Then I can transfer my existing HDD over.

One more question: Does this laptop (Precision 7520) support M.2 SATA drives? For compatibility reasons I would prefer this setup. I don't care if it is slower than NVME as it is already much faster than traditional HDD's.

 

Yes, the M.2 slots support both SATA and NVMe.
