Hey, anyone booting their 7720 from a Samsung 9x0 EVO/PRO NVMe drive with the BIOS set to ACHI? Just got a desktop (8920) and the Samsung 960 EVO NVMe will not boot unless RAID is selected. BUT, the Dell supplied Toshiba NVMe (though originally set to RAID) boots just fine in ACHI after a short sequence of reboots to 'convert' it.

Just trying to plan the return of mine in advance while I wait for them to build it :)

Normally, you can get the system to boot properly after changing the disk controller mode, if you hop into safe mode first.

While booted up normally (under RAID mode in this case), reboot Windows from the menu while holding the "Shift" key to get some extra reboot options. Go to troubleshooting and select "Advanced startup options" or whatever. The system will continue to reboot.
When it reboots to the Dell logo, go to the BIOS and change the disk controller mode.
Then, when the system boots to the Windows boot menu, go to safe mode, and while you are there, make sure that the disk controller driver that you want is installed. (Get the Samsung NVMe driver if you are using a Samsung drive.)
Then, reboot back to normal mode and see if it works.

I agree regarding fan/heatsink being one assembly. But if you think that is bad listen to this... a 2010 Dell Studio 1558 laptop with ATI GPU not only has the Fan and Heatsink sold as a single assembly (but was only $10), they designed it so that the heatsink fan assembly was situated under mobo in such a way that it required removing everything else to replace it. I literally had to tear down the entire Studio 1558 laptop to replace the fan and heatsink when the bearings failed.

Haha, I had the same machine and underwent that process 2-3 times. I much prefer the repairability of my M4800...

That's the method I used on my XPS 8920 to switch the stock Dell OEM Toshiba NVMe from RAID to ACHI. No drivers needed. Windows just "found" them in a few seconds right after booting into safe mode with ACHI With the Samsung 960 EVO installed, it won't even boot at all unless the mode is RAID. In RAID or ACHI, the BIOS sees the drive and Win10 can be installed to it. But afterwards, no boot drive found unless you put it into RAID.

So I'm hoping the 7720 doesn't have that same problem.

FWIW on my 7510 with Samsung 950 Pro, it works fine with both AHCI and RAID mode (but I have to use the safe mode trick to switch between them). I think the 7X20 should be the same.

That's encouraging. It also makes me want to get a 950 and try it in the 8920 desktop. If that worked, then Samsung could be blamed for tweaking the controller in the 960 and not telling anyone. I imagine it's a full time job for the teams to keep up with the new hardware we insist on using :)

Dell says a fix is in the works but will take time. Probably mostly red tape time given the risk of BIOS updates and the amount of testing they probably have to do.

Looks like mine left China today or on their Wednesday. Tracking says 8 "total pieces". Some assembly required I guess :) Or eight people are getting their orders.

Hi! do you use softwares like solidworks/catia/creo/siemens nx? could you test these gpus P3000/P4000/P5000 with SPECviewperf 12? are there better performances than m3000m/m4000m/m5000m?

Never had a laptop of this caliber. Question about the graphics. Does the Intel only drive the laptop display and the Nvidia sits idle until an external display is connected?

Really sad about the bleed on the screen. Guess I'll give them a chance to replace it. Looks like something I would have ended up with if I had attempted to assemble it myself - knowing absolutely nothing about assembling laptop screens.

Not really sure I got what I ordered since images of this units various display configurations are hard to come by. I expected "narrow border" to be just that. The border on this looks like any other laptop.

Talk about sluggish. Granted my 7 year old Vaio has a SATA SSD, but it boots Windows 10 allot quicker than this thing. I'll try moving to NVMe before returning it, but I expected even a 7200 platter to be quicker than my old Vaio.

Really pleased with my 8920 desktop, but this thing is a real let down. I wish it ran and looked as good on the inside as it does on the outside. Opening the lid ruined everything :)
