JMicron drives are to be avoided, although the newest JMicron/Toshiba controllers are better. They are infamous for stuttering.

Is that the case on the current ones? I see where that was the case about 6 months ago.

The G.Skill Titan has the older controller. You can read the newegg reviews for users' experience.

Only the Kingston SSDNow V series has the latest JMicron/Toshiba controllers that do not appear to stutter.

Based on that info, the SuperTalent MasterDrive SX (SAM28GM25S) should be ok? Read a review on NewEgg that it used the latest Samsung controller.

I can get one of those for 284 shipped with eBates and Bing on eBay. Think I even have some eBay bucks! :)

I just loaded the Masterdrive sx 128 into my M4400 and it does really well! Its quick, no studders and the system recognizes it as a Samsung drive. I had an OCZ Core 128 in there before with that jmicron controller and had to tweak the OS to minimize studders. This new drive is good with no tweaking in W7.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered one from eBay. Someone had one cheaper, but tax in CA was 9.25%. OUCH!

    340
    +5.99 shipping
    -10.20 eBates
    -27.20 Bing cash back
-24.23 in eBay bucks I have accrued
    284.36 shipped.

Can't complain. Looking forward to getting it. Going to wait for W7 RTM which should be a couple weeks then put it in and transfer data. Thanks again for all in input!

Are you sure you won't pay tax ?? Quite often they open it at the border and charge tax even if it is marked as a gift

Do not buy a JMicron drive - you will regret it. Even the newer JMicron drives aren't worth their money.

Rumors say that Intel might be launching SSDs with higher capacity within the next two weeks (http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/29/intel-launching-cheaper-ssds-with-up-to-320gb-capacity-soon/), which should mean lower prices for the current capacities. The Intel MLC SSDs are still the best performing non-server SSDs, see the most recent Anandtech numbers, comparing X25-M to Vertex and Corsair P256: http://anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3582&p=2. The "4KB Random Read" is most important.

I got one of the Intel X25 80GB drives and could not be more pleased with it. Cut boot times significantly and the whole machine is MUCH snappier. This was better than doubling the processor....

I have a question though. I have a few older laptops that use PATA drives. Is there an equivelent top notch SSD that is PATA? This would seem just the boost these older machines need to keep them useful for a couple more years.

I need more that 80gb of space....or I would have gotten one of those. I am really looking forward to getting my SuperTalent MasterDrive SX (SAM28GM25S). Seems like good bang for the buck.

I would love to get a PATA as well for my wife's old laptop that I can't seem to pry away from her!
