You might have seen this one:

    http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...sk=view&id=333&Itemid=60&limit=1&limitstart=7

The OCZ Summit, which is an MLC based on 2nd-gen Samsung controller and Samsung flash, comes in behind the OCZ Vertex in almost all benchmarks. It would have lagged behind the Intel SSD's too. Especially disconcerting is the very poor HDTune Pro Random write IOPS scores, although the IOMeter scores are acceptable. Perhaps the reviewer did not test it correctly.

At the $300 price point that the OP is interested in, the Intel 80GB X25-M is probably the safest choice. The 128GB Vertex is also an excellent choice. There is a new Kingston SSD V series 128GB that can be had for about $225, but it is slower and uses the revamped JMicron/Toshiba controller. The verdict is still out on that controller.

With a little bit of work, the 80GB Intel can be had for about $280 and the Vertex about $340.

I'm really into SSDs and have used SSDs (Samsung SLC, X25-M, Ultradrive ME) for one year now and have been reading on this all the time, so I think I have some knowledge on this topic.

Performance rating when used as OS drive imho is:

    Intel > Indilinx > Samsung 2.Gen MLC >>> JMicron JMF602

Best price compared to performance for Laptop use:
Supertalent Ultradrive ME (Indilinx MLC) (I'm using the 256GB Version in my E6400 with no problems of any sort). This is cheaper than Vertex or Falcon oder G-Monster V3, but actually these drives are all the same!!!

Not released (SSDs available in July) but might be quite good:
New JMicron MLC Controller with Cache (JMF612)

And don't buy any SSD with JMF602 Controller:
    Bad price/performance relationship, stuttering

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is Samsung 2.Gen MLC inferior to Indilinx based SSDs....

    - When used in notebooks you normally will place your OS on the SSD --> Random Read/Write performance of small file sizes is the important thing-->Indilinx Random Write at 4K File Size: about 10 MByte/s, Samsung: 4 MByte/s

    - Performance of any Controller design using "Write combining" (SLC and MLC!) will decrease over time --> therefore the TRIM Command is used --> YOu already can trim all Inlinx based SSDs to restore performance , but Samsung isn't trim ready at the moment, but will be when Win7 is released that will natively support trim command --> No possibilty to restore Performance on Samsung drives at the moment...

Goodness that Intel X25-E is off the chart faster than those other drives. Why is that?

Shame that Samsung PB22-J is not available directly to consumers.

It is available as the Corsair P128 or P256. The OCZ Summit series is also a rebadged PB22-J.

It's an SLC. It's also an Intel.

Now that I am totally confused..... I think I shall wait a month or so for some of the newer ones and the prices to come down a little. I figure I should be able to find something in the 300-350 range with 128gb of space with good performance.

You can do that right now. If you shop around, the Indilinx based and the Samsung 2nd gen SSD's are in that price range.

I will be getting the 120 GB Vertex for my E4300 soon. Good price and performance.
