It's the 2nd-gen Samsung MLC. Reviews are OK. Depending on whether you have to pay sales tax, TigerDirect has a very similar price for the OCZ Summit after the bing.com cashback.

Hi guys, I am planning on getting an SSD in time for Win7's release. Is there a technical manual online that shows how to replace the internal HDD in the E6400 ?

I've tried searching the forum for E6400 technical manual, didn't get any usable hits.

It's very very easy.. takes 2 mins.

Flip the laptop over, on the right side there, there are 2 screws, take them out, then the HD slides out.

    Manual is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/sm/html/hdd.htm#wp1180023

    Thanks CG1 !

If I order the Intel X-25M, would I need anything else (some adapters or brackets, ...) ? From reading the board here, I gather I need to make sure the firmware is new enough. Is there anything else?

Software-wise, can someone tell me if this will work :

I have a system image of my current setup that I like.

I will use the vista discs that came with the E6400, if I recall correctly, the setup process will begin with partitioning the drive. Once that's done, I will quit setup right away and boot from my USB and restore my system image onto the new partition, and that's it ?

What software did you use to create the image? If you used Vista's (or Win7's), I believe you cannot copy the image to a drive that is smaller in capacity.

Acronis works fine for copying images.

I used Macrium Reflect; I think it allows going to a smaller disc. But that's a moot point anyway, I will likely keep my OS partition on the SSD the same size as right now (around 40 Gb).

I want to replace my hard drive in my E6400 with a solid state drive also. The Dell rep for my company said that the E6400 only supports 128GB solid state drives. I currently have a regular hard drive (250GB) and use Windows XP. Would I be foolish to trust the Dell rep? Would a Samsung 2nd gen MLC 256GB solid state drive work with the E6400 running XP? From the other posts in the thread, I think I have been given bad information. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I was looking at the G.Skill Titan (JMicron controller) series. They pop up on eBay for 256mb for around 375 here and there. Decent drive? I know it's a bit slower than the Indilinx controller but I am not looking to break speed records here....
