They're actually that expensive here. I have a receipt for my ZBook in my sig for 6449 chf. The discount is fantastic for our market. A fully loaded P71 or 17 G4 will run you 5k-ish.

    Hi Guys ,
Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere on here , anyway this is my problem [ if indeed it is a propblem ] .
I bought a Dell 7710 about a year ago but silly me I left it unplugged for several months preferring to use my battered old Lenovo T410 instead .
When I returned to the 7710 I downloaded a few photographs but discovered I couldn't find my Pictures Folder , my son told me I must have corrupted files so I phoned Dell Support who ended up doing a ' System Resore ' - which solved my problem .
I then left my 7710 unplugged again for several weeks going back to it yesterday .
This time a message came up stating ' Your device needs the latest security updates ...' [ also in the background saying ' because you haven't installed the latest version of Windows 10 ] - the first update took around 30 minutes , it then proceeded to perform another update lasting approximately 20 minutes , upon finishing I had to restart my laptop , upon restarting I saw the Windows Logo stuck in the middle of my screen , thinking it was stuck I pressed the on/off btoon until it shut down and restarted it again - it seemed fine the second time around .

This morning at 7am I switched i on again to receive the same update message - it repeated he two updates and again when I restarted was left with the Windows logo stuck in the middle of the screen .

Yesterday I googled the problem and found this -

Do I have a problem or is it just my machine catching up wih all the necessary updates needed because it had been left unplugged for so long ?

    Yours ,

    Peter .

I switched the 7710 on again at 4pm and the the message ' Your device needs the latest security updates ' appeared again , the same two updates both taking around 30 minutes each , it would appear that these updates are on a loop - Does anyone have a solution , should I call Dell Support ?

Let the updates install. When it restarts, let it keep running for a while. Don't turn it off just because you think it's stuck. How long did you wait?

    Hi Rik ,
I was a little impatient during the first re-start and didn't give it much time not knowing it was still downloading but now I know I'll leave it alone in future - What's bothering me is the updates occur EVERY time I start up my laptop , that shouldn't be the case should it ?

    (rlk, not rik)

When you're interrupting it, you're not letting it complete the installation, so it has to go back and do it over.

Try giving it at least 30 minutes to complete the installation after it restarts.

Apologies , Rlk , my eyesight ain't what it used to be -

The reason why I'm posting is this -

Are two updates every time I switch on my 7710 the norm with W10 , my instinct says it shouldn't be the case .

Every time I switch on my 7710 lately I'm getting these 2 updates lasting 30 minutes each - should this happen , is it the norm with W10 Home [ 2015 version ] ?

Up to now I've been using W7 Pro exclusively

You shouldn't get updates every time you turn the system on.

Check to see what version of Windows 10 you have (latest is 1709), it could be hopping to try to catch up if you are way behind. You can check from the Help->About menu in File Explorer.

It could be the case that something is causing the update to fail, which is why it keeps trying to install it over and over. You can check the update history in settings and see if this is the case. If it is failing, you'll have to find the Windows Update logs and see if you can find a hint as to why.

In any case, this seems like more of a Windows 10 issue than a Precision 7710 issue, so you may have more luck getting help in a different type of forum.

You could check if the updates succeeded or failed in Windows Settings (<ctrl>+ i): Update&Security > Windows Update "View installed update history".

If the updates failed they will be retried. Maybe this is what you see?

I had a problem with not seeing my Pictures Folder so Dell Support did a system restore on it and I'm wondering if these updates are trying to catch up from there .

I have Windows 10 2015 installed - do I need to have the latest version on my machine ?
