If it failed in the manner described with the Intel graphics disabled (only the nVidia enabled), but worked with the Intel graphics enabled, I'd suspect that there's an unresolved software issue. But every vendor seems to implement hybrid graphics differently (and even different product lines by the same vendor), and maybe Dell's architecture is different from Lenovo's.

The whole Skylake/Kaby Lake hybrid graphics stuff is, as best as I can tell, a real mess.

All I can tell you is applying that 1.14 bios update to MY laptop bricked the motherboard. DELL tried reverting/downgrading/etc and nothing worked. A new mobo with the old bios was the only fix for me.

thanks for the honest feedback, this 1.14.4 seems to have a lot of problems, i managed to flash the bios back to 1.13.6 (via bios not Windows) and it can restart now. in the midst of flashing the error message was 'ME failed to update FW', not sure what is this. Dell is offering to change the motherboard and i am reluctant as there are loads of programs & settings. i am really not sure if it is windows or bios or motherboard issue. i seriously did not expect a Precision to have these kind of problems, i don't have a solution yet

The programs and settings are on your storage drive, not the mobo...

Hmmm, I guess you may have to contact the software companies and ask them to allow the new mobo to activate (much like if you change the mobo on a Win 7 machine).

yes those are my main concern when changing mobo, even if i need not reinstall but the licences may not work, long shot in asking software co though, changing mobo is like changing laptops. i really hope Dell has a solution to this..........this is the first time i felt 7710 Precision's are not designed well.

What software are you using that is so particular about the motherboard? Every vendor that I have dealt with is happy to accommodate swapping out one machine for another, when it comes to licensing... Sometimes it is automatic and sometimes it takes a phone call, but they get that sometimes you will have to replace a piece of hardware or switch to a new machine entirely.

Sounds like an issue with the software, not the 7720....
If MS will do it for a Windows license, surely this manufacturer should too.

    What are the programs?

Visio, Opus, most of them are tied to the MB, it is only logical. We all agree hardware have to change ie ssd, rams, even GC and these hardware changes has no effect at all when made, but seriously motherboard and we expect no effect at all on licenses ?
