@Skyehammer I think so. Version 1709 is the latest Windows 10. The gap between your version of Win10 from 2015 and the current version is so large that Microsoft is saying you are vulnerable. You might be on a very old version such as 1511. Aaron gave isntructions how to check your version.

But it seems that the Windows Update is stuck or in a loop. You can delete the windows update cache folders manually to force it to start a fresh update cycle and maybe that will help.

    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mckittrick/windows-update-issues-clear-windows-update-cache/

Eventually once it gets caught up to a certain point on your updates it will begin upgrading you to newer version of Win10 1709. But there are probably alot of updates it has to perform first before it makes that jump to 1709.

Thank you to RLK and others who so kindly replied to my problem .

On Wednesday night I was left alone to do my own thing as my wife had to take our son to Drama so I switched on my 7710 and allowed the updates to finish then restarted and allowed the machine to complete its further updates and that seems to be the end of my problem . I started up my 7710 twice yesterday and no update message .

The reason I became paranoid about these updates ' problem ' is because I didn't allow the updates to complete naturally and because approx 1440 other people had the same problem [ see my original post and link ] , I became paranoid that it must be a virus .

    Thanks again , Guys .

Thank you for your input , Ygohome

Will the updates transform my version of Windows 10 1511 to the latest version 1709 , or is there more to it than that ?

The updates alone should do it, I believe.

Yeah, you'll know when you are updated to 1709 because it is a BIG update. When 1709 updates you can see that it did so in your update history. You can also check your version following aarons instructions he posted somewhere above. It is also obvious because 1709 reboots your system during that update and you are greeted with a big "Hello" message on an all black screen as if you just installed windows for first time. But like I said, there are probably a number of updates prior to getting there before the big update to 1709. Then after 1709 update finishes there will probably be another cumulative 1709 update.

Thank you both , Ygohome and Aaron -

As you might have gathered I am totally lacking in computer skills [ though I would love to learn more ] I bought the Dell Precision 7710 as it was the best machine I could afford at the time , I'll admit it was total overkill for my needs but I wanted a machine that would last and similar laptops with the specs I required [ 16GB Ram - 1TB + 256GB SSD ] were all of a similar price I bought my 7710 for - I was VERY lucky in that I found a seller who had bought 4 7710s for a company that subsequently went bust but had left one 7710 unused and in situ when the Receivers arrived - the owner of the 7710 claimed his machine back and was selling it on Ebay and that was where I came in - it remained unsold so I got in touch and did a deal - I gave him more than he would have got on Ebay and paid him to fit a 256GB SSD - He was more than happy as was I .

Thanks to everyone who helped me .
