    Just fount this thread interresting because I'm interested in old and cheap ultraportables which are offen better than newer netbooks.
    I like those because they offer 3:4 12" inch screen, Pentium M ULV processors (which by the way have better performance/TDP spec than Atoms).
    but ivar, no spec from you about your laptop though all the thread!
    Could you please put spec of your laptop, please?
    I'm interesting the most about CPU, RAM (which type it uses), HDD(which type it uses), battery life.
    I also congratulate you owning such a nice mashine.

    Then one of these may be of interest to you. However, the battery life doesn't look wonderful.

    After accidentally frying my original X1 (plugged it into a Dell 90 watt charger :( ), I found and ordered another from ebay for $229. I love these things.

    Here's the specs:
    Specs

    * Intel Pentium M processor 733 (1.1GHz ULV) combined with the Intel 915GMS chipset
    * 12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 768) Super Bright display
    * 256MB to 2.28GB of DDR2 400MHz shared SDRAM
    * Choice of 30GB or 60GB hard drives
    * Standard internal Intel PRO wireless 2200 802.11b/g and Dell Wireless Bluetooth 350
    * Choice of optional external 8X DVD-ROM, 24X CD-RW/DVD combination and 8X DVD+/-RW optical drives, floppy disk drive, and 40GB second hard drive
    * Integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit5 Ethernet and 56K12 V92 modem
    * Ports include: two USB 2.0, VGA, headphone and microphone, SD/Compact Flash cardreader, IEEE 1394 (FireWire)
    * Optional 6-cell, 53WHr Smart Lithium Ion Battery
    * Dimensions: 0.98-inch high, 11.26-inches wide, 7.7-inches deep; (25.0mm high, 286mm wide, 196.8mm deep)

    Windows 7 runs fine on this machine. Only compatibility issue was with the video, but I found that you can install the Windows XP video driver on Windows 7!!
    Also, to increase speed, you can install 2 gigs RAM, and also stick in a 4 gig high-speed SD Card in the front reader and use it for ReadyBoost.
    The hard drive is the real bottleneck here, so some people have installed SSD drives. Those are hard to find (1.8" PATA), and they are about $200 at the time of this post.

    I had no idea there was still so much interested in the X1! In my opinion though there is nothing else in its class. More powerful than any netbook. If anyone is interested, looks like I will try and post the X1 on ebay or similar although I HATE ebay. However I'll be removing the SSDs from them (KingSpec 1.8" 128gb SSD). If you might be interested in either the whole laptop (I have two) or the SSDs themselves I would be willing to make a good deal. Both laptops are in A+++ near mint condition, and even the keyboards are brand spanking new and have absolutely no wear or shine on them. PM me if you might be interested.

    Just added the KingSpec 64gb into my X1 last night, and Windows 7 rated the drive as 5.9. I'm sure it would be higher but there's probably bottlenecks all over the place that limit the maximum speed of the SSD. I don't know if the drive has its own controller, but I am not able to enable Write Caching within Windows for some reason.

    Having said that, it offers quite a performance improvement! Windows 7 boots faster, apps load much faster, even explorer windows open faster. It's quite a significant performance jump, and I think the $200 price tag was worth it, considering new laptops have similar or even worse performance until you hit the $500 range.

    Hi mitake,
    2,5" drives don't fit into Latitude X1, you need a 1.8" drive with IDE PATA interface, 50 pin (Toshiba) connector. ZIF connector drives are possible with adapter.

    My new memory in my X1: 2GB Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300
    I paid 36,16 EUR in March 2010 in Germany.

    As long as we both are talking about Dell Latitude X1: No, it's a 1.8". Toshiba MK6006GAH. I swear. Please believe me or read the other posts... ;)

    We wouldn't have those difficulties finding upgrades, if it was a normal 2,5" notebook hdd.

    Another information for your memory question:
    Product ID of my 2Go Kingston RAM: KVR667D2S5/2G
    Just google it. Prices went up since March, now about 44 EUR.

    For all the details just read the thread. Have fun with your X1!
