    X1 - Win 7 Install Guide:

To install Win 7 on an x1 you need to first download just three drivers from:
    Dell x1 Drivers
    Sigmatel Audio (R99254.exe)
    Synaptics Touchpad (R120179.exe)
    Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG (INTEL_MULTI-DEVICE_A18_R257684.exe)

Right click on the wireless download and use winzip to extract contents of the .exe

Now save this folder and the other two downloaded .exe's to a memory stick.

When you've done your clean install, you can now install the missing drivers:
    1. go to "Device Manager" right click on unknown network controller and click "update driver", browse to the memory card and the wireless folder created above, then the drivers folder. click OK and wait for the drivers to load.
    2. Once done, double click on the touchpad .exe and run (don't bother restarting if asked)
    3. Double click on the Sigmatel .exe and run.
    4. Reboot now.

On reboot the wireless should now be working so connect to your WLAN and run "Windows Update" from control panel.
Uncheck all options EXCEPT the "Intel Corporation - Display - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family" then install.

On restart all will be done.

    Daniel

I don't know if this particular item has been discussed on this post - if it has, I apologize in advance!

Does anybody know if the Kingspec 128gb 1.8" PATA/IDE SSD (as shown at 128GB KingSpec 1.8" PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC)) can work in the X1? If so, anything special that needs to be taken into account?

Also, is there anyway to upgrade the motherboard, processor, or get more than 2gb of RAM into this computer? My X1 has been my trusty sidekick for so many years now, and being that it's nearly impossible to find as small form-factor but yet as fully-functioning a notebook these days, I'm dying to see if there's anyway to prolong its life and take it into the next decade.

    Thanks! :)

Hello Mr. Bond, welcome to this thread!

As far as I know (and I've read the whole thread before!) there is no way to upgrade the X1 more than 2 GB RAM and faster replacements for the HDD (SSD with up to 85 MB/sec read, 38 MB/sec write) and WLAN (802.11n).

However, if display, keyboard or battery of your X1 is broken, you'll still find vendors of replacement parts.

It's also possible to run Windows 7 on your X1!

URGENT: You chose the wrong SSD at memoryc.com with 44 pins.

You need the version with 50 pins, Kingspec calls it "CF" because it has the same connector as CompactFlash cards. This interface is often called "Toshiba style". See this:
128GB KingSpec 1.8" IDE CF 50-pin SSD Solid State Disk (MLC)

PhotoFast has even faster drop-in replacement, but it's more expensive:
    PhotoFast UK - G-Monster 1.8 50pin IDE V4

In this thread you'll find positive experiences with both brands. Furthermore, some guys installed RunCore ZIF drives with an adapter.

I just ordered the 32 GB version of KingSpec. Next week I will install it with Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Hi all,

I just happened to find this forum and thread. If I only had found this earlier! Very interesting information. I am from Germany and also a proud owner of an X1.

    Regarding WLAN upgrade:

Does it work well? Any experiences? How do you install the card? It's said to be a miniPCI card but you talked about "replacement". Does it mean you opened the X1 took out te old module and plugged in the new one (which I might prefer..)?

    Thanks in advance for reply!

    Hi!

I just ordered a KingSpec (64GB, 211€). Do you have any experiences with the drive?

I had some bad experiences (Photofast GMonster). It was slightly faster but had some "hick-ups" (up to a second of freezing the system) which made it unusable. The vendor told me that the controller version (3) was the problem and at that time no newer version was available...

Does anyone have any experiences with "hick-ups", especially with the KingSpec?

    Thanks in advance for reply

    Hi All,

New to the Forum - will add my 2 pence worth!

Latitude X1 great little machine. I own an original spec 30gb HDD 1gb RAM XPsp2.

I admit there are better machines out there, but I have succesfully run the following operating systems which have been sufficient for my needs:

MSDOS 7!!!! - a period where I played old DOS games (now on bootable USB)
    WINDOWS XP Proffessional SP3
LINUX - FEDORA9, MINT8&9, UBUNTU 9.04+ (all live vesrions on USB)
    WINDOWS 7 Ultimate

I am currently running WINDOWS 7 which I didn't have much hope for but I was pleasently surprised!!

Again, its not lightning fast but runs quicker and more stable then Windows XP Professional SP3!! I am not very technical but have noticed that the X1 gets hotter quicker running windows 7. May be I haven't configured it properly or just the fact that it requires more processing power. Nothing an inexpensive latop cooler won't resolve!

I only really use my X1 for internet use and to SYNC my Nokia E71 phone. Upload and transfer photos from digital media. Built in SD card can read SD and SDHC memory cards. Can also read 64GB CF card with ease.

The X1 is blazing on linux platforms. And has subsequently converted me from windows to linux!! Main reason is Boot Time, and everything works as soon as you swithch on - no drivers and registration keys!!

My X1 is currently in the lounge and linked upto a 40inch LCD TV via VGA to DVI!! I operate it remotely via wireless keyboard and mouse (combo). I use it maninly for viewing digital photos and Google Earth. When friends and family see this they are always amazed. When I finally reveal the sercret (the X1) they are even more amazed!!

To me the Latitude X1 is like a classic car. It was the best of the best of its time. Nowadays it wouldn't look out of place amongst the latest Netbooks and ultra portables!

Many thanks to all the members that have posted there comments and views which have really helped me in getting the most out of my lattitude X1. Its good to read all your posts.

    Hi,

Indeed! Very interesting information here. However, it seems dead now (no more replies).

Anyway, in the meantime I received my SSD (Kingspec, 60GB) and installed Win7 (1MB RAM). For anyone interested: it works as mentioned above; no issued with drivers. Regarding my concerns mentioned above: so far, my SSD had no "hick-ups".

Still, do not expect miracles. It's _not_ lightning fast, but still fast enough to work. For me personally it's still one of the best notebooks but compared to others, the LCD is a little too dark. And unfortunately it has some scratches already...

@Asghai: intersting things you are doing with the X1.
