    I am almost sure that the 40Hz resseting problem has to do with power managment function when you go on battery or use the extended battery management.

    I have the e6420 but it is the same platform (I have the 17 2720QM cpu and dual vga)

    Has anyone else notice that when you have MSEXCEl running or/and the facebook page opend the machine freezes?It has happened 3 times in 5 months ,it isn't something that really bothers me but why not fix it.

    has any one ever added the backlit keyboard to their machines? What did you have to replace other than the hardware or was there any software needed as well?

    I did try searching, and have come up fruitless...

    I have, connector is the same as in non-backlit, and no additional software is required - Dell System Manager just detects it, allowing to set level of backlit etc., piece of cake.

    After 40Hz refresh rate problem, something really weird happened. My notebook was in sleep mode, and suddenly it decided to recover from sleep mode!!!!!!! Artificial Intelligence or something like that!!!!!!! I have read it before, a similar or the same problem, in this forum but it is the first time that this problem has appeared on my laptop. I know that there was a similar bug with Lenovo Thinkpad T520 laptops and finally they manage to confront it with a bios update. Any suggestions?

    This can happen when the system is starting a restore point or other automatic "house keeping" process and it is not considered a bug. Just because a system appears asleep doesn't mean scheduled tasks or power saving devices are not active in some form. With that said, I never use sleep mode when plugged in or on battery and just set the LCD to dim/shut-off when not in use after a 5-10 minutes but keep the HDD/SSD always ON. I am not a fan of the system going in to a state of power saving that conflicts with its normal operational state.

    In regards to your 40Hz issue, did you make sure to install the Intel chipset and video drivers first and not the NVIDIA? If Optimus is enabled, the HD3000 must be installed and working fine before any NVIDIA drivers are installed to insure proper switching later. Also, any GPU power saving features must be disabled since the HD3000 in itself is the power saving feature of the NVIDIA GPU.

    Thank you for your response Scott_RC-TEK.

    You are right Scott. Also, I noticed there is an option in Control Panel -> Power Options -> Select Power Plan (Dell in my case) -> Change plan settings -> Change Advanced Power settings -> Sleep -> Allow wake timers.

    As far as 40Hz issue, I proceed as follows:
    1. I uninstalled the Nvnidia drivers and restarted the system.
    2. System Installed SVGA drivers and restarted the system.
    3. I deleted Nvdia forder from my hdd drive.
    4. I run CCleaner to delete any nvidia record from registry.
    5. I restarted.
    6. I set refresh rate at 60Hz and restarted.
    7. After restarting refresh rate is set to 40Hz.
    8. I Install the latest Chipset drivers from Dell site and restarted.
    9. I reinstall the latest drivers for HD3000 Intel graphic family from Dell Site and restarted.
    10. I set refresh rate to 60Hz and restarted.
    11. After restarting problem remained and refresh rate is set to 40Hz automatically.
    12. I Installed the latest nvidia drivers from Dell site and restarted.
    13. Aftrer restarting I set refresh rate to 60Hz and restarted again.
    14. After restarting problem remained and refresh rate is set to 40Hz automatically.

    Can you help me with that more?
    I use Dell power plan. Also, I noticed there is an option in Control Panel -> Power Options -> Select Power Plan (Dell) -> Change plan settings -> Change Advanced Power settings -> Dell Enhanced Settings -> Screen Refresh rate. "On battery" and plug-in " options are set to "OS Controlled" and the alternative option is "Minimum". Also under "Intel(R) Graphic Power plan" container, "On battery" and plug-in " options are set to "Balanced".

    Thank you Scott.

    I disabled Optimus to look for 40Hz refresh rate problem, and I got the same error. The problem is that during nvidia setup, the installer changes the path system variable!!!!!!! So Proceed as follows:
    1. Right Click Computer and select properties -> Advanced System settings -> Environment variables -> Choose PATH variable from "System variables" (not user variables) and then Click Edit.
    2. Be sure that you have the followings:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\;
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\OEM\DLLShared;
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\OEM\12.0\DLLShared;
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Roxio\OEM\AudioCore\

    If not just add them to the path.

    3. Copy all dlls from
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\OEM\12.0\DLLShared
    to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\OEM\12.0\SharedCOM

    That's all.
    I have the same question about Where I can download Roxio Creator Starter.
    Is it located somewhere on Dell Ftp server?

    I would disable/delete the Dell power profile and create a new generic "balanced performace" one. Then, before restarting, delete the ROXIO software and all the video drivers PLUS dashboards.

    When you restart, go in to the BIOS and confirm Optimus is enabled.

    Once you get back into Windows 7, confirm your new power saving mode is still the generic one you just created and also confirm your display is set to 60Hz. If all is good, proceed with the Intel and then NVIDIA driver installs.

    Finally restart the system a few more times and confirm you are staying at 60Hz. If so, great. If not, a fresh install of Win7 without all the Dell control extras would be advised.

    For the Roxio software, it should be available to you under the system software link within your Dell account page once you have registered/added your system to your account systems profile.
