My current computer is a 2-1/2 year old Toshiba Portege R705-P25. It has an i3-350M with the built-in "GMA HD" graphics.

I've ordered an e6520 from the Dell Outlet. It has an i5-2520M and will use the built-in "HD 3000" graphics. Like the Toshiba, no separate video card. The Dell has the "FHD" 1920x1080 display.

Here's my rather clueless question. On the Toshiba I have occasionally used what I believe is called the "Extended Desktop" under Windows 7 whereby the laptop's screen (1366x768) and my 19" external monitor are both active at once and the desktop stretches across the two screens. The mouse moves back and forth between them. Seems to work well.

Will I be able to do the same trick with my new '6520? Can the default Intel graphics functionality drive a 1920x1080 laptop display and an external LCD at the same time for the Extended Desktop?

Not a huge deal if I can't do it as that isn't something I use daily. But there are times it's a nice option...

The e6520 came today and of course it works fine with the Win 7 Extended Desktop, combining the 1920x1080 computer display and my 1680x1050 external monitor. Nice notebook, it is.

trick: you can use [Win] + P to switch on/off external display :D (same as Fn+F8).
I'm going to buy a docking station to have a display port, it only can display as 2560x1440 on Dell U2711 with display port cable plug in docking :D

My right speaker is dead two months ago, so I use 3.5mm jack to headphone instead.

I have the E6520 with 8GB Ram and the Samsung SSD drive.
When playing an MP3 the sounds stutters regular, like the processor can't handle it.
Anyone with the same problem and maybe a solution?

Ooh, I like that little menu it pops up when I press [Win]+P and that shortcut works when I'm using my big USB keyboard instead of the built-in one.

A couple days before I got my Dell a friend of mine got a 17" HP laptop and he has a 22-23" monitor that will do the 2560x1440. I'm thinking that my next desktop machine at work may have one honkin' big display instead of using two 20"-ers like I'm doing now.

My left speaker is shot. Been 1 year and probably went dead a while ago. It still works just has distortion or vibration when on loud. To change it is a big job. Most of the machine has to come apart.

    Guys ,
My laptop speakers both of them went burst within six months and I am not using the speakers also.
Had it replaced but quality sucks.

I am honestly giving up on dell and it's professional grade laptops

Another service call within week of this fixed speakers,

Stupid keyboard and it's backspace key.
It just came off on its own. When I contacted dell, first they wanted me to contact Indian call center sayin system is in india.

Second they blatantly refused to replace faulty keyboard and guess what is their excuse --- it's routine ware and tear due to usage.

What the hell, professional grade laptop keyboard conked off in six months,
My previous vaio lasted me good five yrs and without single key coming out.

Speaks so much about quality of components.

After giving them nicely, they agreed to replace my keyboard.

When they engineer came to replace it , I was shocked to find that out of 5 screws used to fix the keyboard, only two are present.

Engineer had this to say next time we will bring extra screws.

What kind of quality control dell runs ?

I hate to recommend dell to my collegues and already decided to pick up MacBook.

And latitude I am using is top of the line spec.

I never expected this kind of quality control of so called professional grade laptops.
My four five yrs old vaio still has better quality components.

For anyone dealing with a keyboard issue. I spilled coffee on one the keyboard and trashed it. I guess it might be spill resistant to a point but no dice for me. I ordered one from Dell. $54 for lighted and $8 shipping. It did take a couple of days for them to get it shipped out. But it was easy to install. The trim ring came off and put back on easy. Just snaps in. The bottom case cover has to come off due to 3 screws holding the keyboard. The other screws are at the front side of the keyboad. I only had 3 there but it looks like 2 were missing from assembly. Also the connection for the ribbon tape/data cable was new to me and tricky. Disconnect the ribbon at the keyboard only. The new board doesn't come with the ribbon. When installing You have to make sure the ribbon it well up into the connector before shutting down the clamp. No more pull off ribbon connectors..Now you have to open the black flap and the ribbon comes out and to re-install you have make sure it's well in before shutting down the clamp. I had to use a good magnifier to see good.
