a simple question - you may have already done this, but if you use the VGA/HDMI out, does the picture look fine? Just checking to see if it is video card/driver/overheating related or something.....

I've had mine for over a year now, and never seen that message - I have an i5-2520 (but that's a 2-core, and I assume you have a 4-core, or just hyperthreaded?)

I guess it could be the cable, but what are the odds of it working fine with the low res panel, but not the high res ones and the high res ones experiencing slightly different symptoms with the same cable? I definitely don't know the signals carried on each of the wires.

I guess I could always order another $20 cable and see what happens...

Just tested as a sanity check and the VGA output works perfectly, so I don't think I have any video card issues.

I am planning to add a SDD to my E6520 using a caddy to replace the DVD optical drive.
While I understand that the HDD is served by a Sata 2 (or Sata 300) interface, does anybody know if the DVD drive is on Sata 2 as well? Will I be using the SDD at 3Gbit/s?
    Thanks for your reply.

You should install ssd in native Hdd bay so it will be running on 6gbps that's sata 3.

Install hard disk in optical bay.
It does not matter if it's sata two or three.

Unless you planning, ssd in both bays.

I've had my 6520 for over a year now. I have trouble with transferring large files. Way too slow. Files from an external storage device to HDD via USB or ESata. Any ideas on what's going on? It's been one nice machine other then that.

Just purchased one for my sister with the following specs:

    Core i5-2520m
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    15.6" 1080p LED screen
    2 year NBD onsite warranty
    320GB 7200RPM HDD

for only $785 including tax and shipping!!!

If you go to Dell and price a new one out now with these specs, its ~$1400

I was able to buy one refurbished for $785. Amazing deal.

I've seen the E6420 in action and I fell in love with the high class construction. Wayyyy better than the previous generations of Latitude.

So for her schooling, she'll be with an E6520 because the 14" E6420 is too small.

I'm still annoyed, however, at how tacky the Inspirons STILL look. I guess that will never change.

The chipset used in the E6520 supports SATA-II/III on both SATA channels 00 and 01. As mentioned, install the SSD in your primary drive bay (ch. 00) and the mechanical HDD in the media bay (ch 01) via a media bay drive caddy. The rear eSATA port is SATA-II only.

Thanks to everyone who replied to me, it ended up that the LVDS cable that I had originally ordered was defective. I ordered one from a different online reseller and once installed everything was good to go. It indeed was very odd that the faulty cable worked on the low res screen, but not the high res one. I guess you learn something new each day!

I am a lucky owner of E6520. And I could be even more happier if someone can help me with one little bit annoying problem. I have strange sounds in my earphones while using that laptop. Those are not frequent, 1 per 3-5 minutes, with longevity of 0.1 sec. Sounds like a click mostly.
Any ideas how to get rid of it?
