E6430 Owners Thread

Dear all,

I've read through the whole thread but could not find a final answer if someone is running a recent E6430 build with 16GB RAM.
I got a pretty good offer from Dell for a i7-3740QM modell, but need the option to put 16GB in later.
One post here mentioned that there are issues with suspend to RAM with 16GB...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Quick question. I am looking to upgrade my internal hard drive on my E6430 to SSD.

So, if I understand this correctly - I would get a caddy like the one below to take on my current Hard Drive for storage:

And also get a SSD drive of either 128 or 256 GB - likely one of the Samsung Pros. As they seem well reviewed.

Any traps or pitfalls I should know about as far as the migration or installation process?

Not pitfalls imo, but make sure to install the Samsung Magician tool that comes with the SSD. The tool will also help you in adjusting Windows settings for SSDs.

As for the caddy, I'd go for this one instead With Ejector 2nd Hard Drive Caddy for Dell E6420 E6520 E6320 E6430 E6530 E6330 | eBay - good quality (Nimitz!) and with a metal frame (some cheaper Chinese ones come with a plastic frame). I have just received mine and love it. Took about 14 days to arrive from China (I am based in Germany).

My config is the E6430 with the 120 GB 840 Basic Samsung SSD and a 1 TB Hitachi HDD installed in the caddy.

Some users struggle with the magician software - but hopefully I wont have those problems. The Caddy you mention - is it fitting nicely to the exterior of the notebook? Do you mind that there are no screws in the caddy for securing the hard drive?

Yes, the Magician Software (recently updated) for instance registers itself in the autostart folder, even with every update. I tend to ignore it though.

As for the caddy: it comes with screws and a (relatively good) screwdriver. I took some snaps of what it looks like on my machine:

 

Has anyone heard their hard drive squeak? Mine squeaks every so often, a few times a day. The duration is a second or less. My hard drive is WD3200BEKT.

 

Couple of days ago I got E6430: i7 3740QM/Nvidia, 8 GB, SSD, HD+

I like the build quality, the look of it, Windows 7 works fine on it and is also very quiet.

But there's something that makes me want to return it: the display (1600 x 900) is just terrible: colours are quite dead and the viewing angles make it difficult to set display in an angle so that I can see whole of it without any distortion. I triet do google it, but did not find the answer: Does Dell put only one type of HD+ displays into this machine, or are there good and worse ones (full price/budget ones)?

I also tried UBUNTU 12.04 and 13.04 on it having disabled Optimus in Bios. Everything works pretty fine, but when I shut down, right when it turns off, I can hear some electric current sound nearby the shutdown button. It is quite loud and it seems it is not good for the laptop if it takes place on daily basis. It never happens when I shut down Windows though. Do you have similar issue with UBUNTU?

And one more question: If you know a reliable reseller of refurbished or used Latitudes in European Union, please, let me know.

The display (1600x900) is really disappointing me. I am thinking of upgrading it: Do you think upgrade for TFT would be possible? If yes, what specs should a new display have? (it would be great, if upgrade for Full HD TFT would work...)

 

I had the LCD replaced on mine after I had a cluster of dead pixels. The screen they replaced it with had a bunch of lines through it and was washed out.....the replacement for that one was just as washed out.....they sent me a new laptop (after some other issues) and this one has a much better screen. How do I tell what kind of panel it is?

 

If your replaced E6430 came with a new service tag or if Dell updated your configuration in their database, you can find out your new display type via service tag. (or pm me the tag and I find out for you).

My E6430 came with AUO display, which is elsewhere on this forum considered to be the best of three used, the other two being made by LG and Samsung. I saw an E6420 with an LG display and I think it is much better (colors, viewing angles) than AUO. E6530 thread also mentions LG's displays being better than AUO on that machine. (HD+ and FHD displays are meant)

Doing some research I found out I can upgrade display only for one that is made for E6420 or E6430 and upgrading resolution or IPS is not recommended due to incompatibility of display firmware.

I am now going to get Intel 6205 to replace Dell 1540 wifi card. I will report if wifi gets better. (I only have a two antenna router with N at home.)
