Tested on an E6520 at full brightness

    Optimus enabled - 1860Ma to 1931Ma
Optimus disabled (would be gpu on) - 1910Ma to 1950Ma

I know the card can pull 17 watts, but with powermiser it might pull much less at idle.

Could anybody comment on the loudness of the speakers on their e6420? In comparison to my e6410, the e6420 is much much quieter....what is your guys experience?

Thanks All for posting your experience.

I am looking to buy E6420 - my major requirement is processor power. Looking for laptop which can work as server for some presentations.

I am having couple of major issues if one can suggest - how much hot machine gets - can we work with this machine after keeping in Lap or it gets Hot enough that you can't do coding / debugging after keeping in Lap.

I am currently having Latitude D520, it has got older and not idle for server. Can someone suggest if it is fine to go with E6410-640M or E6420-2720QM has lot of difference as far as power is concerned.

    Thanks in advance.

^The 2720QM has a lot more power than the 640M. I have both notebooks. I think the e6420 runs cool. I actually think it runs cooler than my e6410...

All I have to compare it to is my D630... and my E6420 can get quite a bit louder than my D630 when testing side by side.

I'm definitely sticking to my e6410 for now. My next notebook however would probably be the new elite or pro book with native Usb 3.0 support

HP gets down to business with redesigned and refreshed EliteBook and ProBook laptops (hands-on) -- Engadget

No one else mentioned that Dell cut costs by removing the LED battery indicators which was a really good idea as one could find the remaining battery life just by the press of a button without even turning on the laptop

Many people here have asked about the weight but i guess weighing scales are not high tech enough to make into early adopter households ;)

(just kidding, no offense to any e6420 owners and thanks for sharing all the info and posting the pics. Would appreciate it once some one reports the weight though)

I have this problem on my e6420, happens if you open the lid and hold the laptop from the corners. Which will eventually pops the corners out, I tried taking the bottom off and on but it still does. Think its a design fault cause the bottom panel flex if holding underneath the DVD-drive or HDD section, could anyone try it?

Thanks a lot for the test. It is hard to get a definitive conclusion from the numbers you measured, but my feeling is that the nvidia GPU is on (albeit idle) even with optimus enabled and only the intel drivers loaded in Linux. Do you agree?

If this is the case, it becomes fundamental for Linux users interested in minimizing battery consumption to help the guys at Linux Hybrid Graphics in determining how to disable the nvidia gpu via an ad-hoc ACPI call.

In any case, I ordered the machine (e6420 with I72720QM and 8Gb of ram). As soon as it arrives I will definitely investigate the issue further and report here for the linux addicted (if any).

    Thanks again
    G.

Yikes. It looks like you'll be able to make a donation to the Dell Outlet. I'm guessing that it's a matter of build quality, not design, although that's an assumption. From long experience with Dell, I've learned that if it's got issues, it goes back.
