    1. So how was the standard WXGA display?

    2. Is there any sign that display on your E6410 was replaced at some point by Dell? I really do have to wonder if the Outlet description was inaccurate, or whether a WXGA display was substituted for a WXGA+ display as part of the refurbishment process?

    3. The Dell outlet is certainly very well stocked with E6410, all of which seem to be listed as having the WXGA+ display? With past models, such as the E6400, Dell seems to have been very accurate when listing system information and the WXGA+ display was far less common than the WXGA.

    4. I'm sure everything will turn out just fine.

    1. The standard WXGA display is not terrible, but I've become acclimated to a WXGA+ resolution after using it for four and a half years. For me, 1280x800 is too low to be practical, so I will have to make a return.

    2. I didn't spend too much time analyzing the display, but I did notice that the back panel had visibly more wear than the rest of the unit. Other than that, I could not make any distinction.

    3. Upon further investigation, I did find E6410 models listed in the Outlet with WXGA displays, though you will tend to find them for the lower priced models. Try sorting by price from low to high, and I guarantee you will find some models with WXGA resolution.

    4. Thank you for the reassurance. I just made the call to resolve the issue. Through the Outlet, it seems the only available resolution is to return the product. I did stipulate that they provide me an address label to cover shipping, since they are at fault. However, the representative did not give me confirmation, and I am not even sure he got the right email address, even though I spelled it out for him. Oh well, at least I have a dispute resolution number to resume progress from if necessary.

Care to share the guess? :)

I have replaced the HD with an Intel SSD and swapped out the DVD drive for a 500GB HD. Not really enthused about going through customer service because they will probably want me to take it back to stock...

Well, you're going to have to "take it back to stock" anyway if the problem is hardware related and you require a replacement system?

When you have a 3 year warranty, you might as well make use of it.

Personally, I can't think of a reason why your swapped and 2nd drives would cause this sort of problem. I would be careful to only update the drivers from the Dell Support website, and while they might not be the latest revisions, there might be fewer headaches involved. I've always had the impression that Dell tests the hardware drivers on their own site so you might end up with fewer conflicts.

With a certain amount of trepidation I just opened the box of my new E6410...

One big concern was the presence or absence of an OS installation disk since I want to be able to set things up my way. There have been many posts lately saying that the disks were no longer included by Dell. Well, I think I did get the installation disk. It's a Dell DVD that says :
    Operating System
    Already installed on your computer
    Reinstallation DVD
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
So this will let me do a clean install, right ?

I have Windows 7 Professional but Dell informs me that the disk is for all versions up to Ultimate and the key chooses the proper version (or something to that effect).

I've only just turned the machine on, fiddled around a bit, and shut it down but as a first impression I'm impressed. The machine has a nice light touch to it. The touchpad appears to work well enough. I'll undoubtedly have more to say once I've reconfigured everything.

Yes, if things has not been changed from my Vista 64-bit back when I ordered my E6400 (before Win7 was out). It was a clean (no drivers) Windows disk, pre-activated, and with the Dell OEM logo on the system properties. Nothing else.
A OS re-install, in my case was not needed, as the system came super clean. It came with the latest drivers, PowerDVD (needed to play DVD's at the Business edition doesn't come with one, so I kept it), and Roxio (easy to uninstall).

So I just bought a refurb 6410. It said it came with Win 7 Pro and XP was installed out of the box. I have both XP and Win7 Install CDs. This means if I want Win7 on the machine I have to do a clean install? I'm curious as to why the outlet said it had Win7 and made no mention the laptop had XP. Now I have to figure out what drivers I need and what order I need to install them.

    Thanks.

One question. It says the first thing to install is this:
It only specifically states Vista, but I'm assuming that this also applies to Win7?

Yes, install the Dell system software first after Win7. These bits tell the OS some of what is on the motherboard.

I am about to clean install Win7 x64 on my E6400 as outlined here. These notes will be updated as I get it done, but they are already descendant of an earlier Vista clean install, so they are fairly vetted. The E6410 install should not be too different... I have an E6410 arriving soon and will eventually do the same for it.

Note that my latest outline favors non-Dell driver sources... to get the latest OEM drivers... you may opt to favor using Dell downloads with the newer E6410.
