E6410 Owner's Thread

Maybe you should give a new install a try. I only used the factory installation for 5 minutes and then I installed everything on my own. I have no problems or bluescreens. Also no CPU Usage at idle. Booting could would be faster if you check the option in the Bios.

First I had problems with the touchpad, too. But since the latest driver update it works well most of the time. I also can use the buttons above the pad with the pad, no delay or so. I can mark some text using the touchpad and the left button above the pad.

But on the other side I don`t like the buttons above for usage with the touchstick. I`d like them to be as flat as the other ones below the pad, but...

 

Open up Task Manager and enable the CPU time column and you can quickly see what is accumulating all the CPU time. I'm seeing 20% usage with a lad of applications open including at least 20 tabs in Firefox with internet connection through an EVDO dongle.

Thanks for the valuable info. I hadn't though about looking at the accumulated CPU time.

Since I stuck with this thing now, I plan to wipe it and try to start over. I had taken the latest drives Dell has to offer for the trackpad and still had the same issues. This was as of last week. Have you tried the acer driver that another thread mentions?

 

No haven`t tried that. When I remember right, than there`s missing a function (scrolling?), so I did`nt go that way. I`ve unchecked TouchCheck for the Trackpad and activated it for the Touchstick, I found that the best solution.

 

I just received my E6410 and it is making some high-pitched noise that seems to be related to the 128mb SSD:
- no noise in bios
- working noise (like from a spinning hd but higher pitched) while starting windows (very active hd indicator)
- constant high-pitched noise with very short interruptions/hickups once loading windows is done (nearly inactive hd indicator)
- still there when i play some hd video (tho thats only 15% cpu usage) so probably no cpu whine from what i read about that issue

Tech support sends me a new ssd. Anyone with a similar noise (behaviour) or ever heard that ssds can cause it?

Edit: They changed their mind, its not the ssd. The noise stops completely when i run the cpu at 30%+, so i guess its the old cpu whine issue?

 

Does anyone have a side-by-side comparison pic of the e6410 and the e6510 so one can gauge their relative size?

Oh wow, that's excellent! Wasn't expecting such a response so quickly tbh! Do you have a clearer pic from the side (so their respective thickness can be more easily seen?)

How would you rate their respective sizes? I'm used to an M1330 sat on my lap, and concerned the e6510 would simply be too big... but it looks like my concerns may be unfounded.

 

The E6510 lid (LCD panel) is about 1/8" thicker than the E6410. The base of the laptop is the same height on both. So, overall, about 1 1/4" thick on the E6510, and 1 1/8" thick on the E6410.

Rating sizes hard to say. Just that I bought the E6410 for the travelling sales guy who needs to work on a plane, and I got the E6510 for myself as a developer who has it docked most of the time. But IMO the E6510 is light and easy to travel with, an improvement over my old Inspiron 6400.
