I am considering purchasing one of these units to replace my E6500 / D630 setup.

I want to step out of the C2D era of hardware and performance as well as stick with a 14" widescreen unit. I love the screen size of my E6500 but carrying it around for work is a pain in my shoulder (bet you thought I was going to say ).

I've read most of the thread and can deal with the heat issues that some people have reported with this unit. My main question is the LCD brightness. The screen on my D630 is very bright and I really like that. The screen on my E6500 is kind of dim. So, in other words - I need a nice bright LCD on my unit.

Other than that, they seem like nice capable units and a worthy replacement to my D630. I am slightly concerned that I will not be able to type as easily on the keyboard as I can on the D630. The keyboard on this unit is very comfortable to type on. If anyone could report back on their typing experience with this unit, that would be great.

The E6410 should have a brighter screen than the D630 because of the LED backlight.

As for the keyboard, the backlit and non-backlit keyboards have distinct feels. The backlit keyboard is softer and more quiet, whereas the non-backlit more similar to the D630 keyboard.

    Hello everybody,

I have been using a Dell E6410 with SSD HDD, and I'm really annoyed by the fact that my fan is very often on... I would like to benefit from the silence of this SSD, this fan is making me mad > However, the computer is pretty clean, no dust and the temperatures of the two cores are 50°C, so nothing that would explain this fan over used :-/

Do some guys on this topic found some solutions about it ? (I'm under linux mint, that is Ubuntu)

    Thanks by advance !

The fan profile on these generations of Dells is just not very well done. If you aren't already on the latest BIOS, updating *might* help. As far as I know, there is still no practical/reliable way to control the fan manually (ie like TPFanControl).

Well, I was under bios A06 ; I just updated to A16, and guess what, the CPU temp are now always more than 55° (50° before, even less sometimes...), even if I have now access to lower frequencies for the CPU with powersave CPU mode (1GHz minimum now), change I expected to lower the temperature ; sometimes the fan stopped, now it never stops. This must be a kind of f***cking joke...

Those Dell machines are really bad, this fan control is really a shame, I can't believe this is supposed to be professional computers...

You might need to replace the thermal grease. CPU temperature is usually around 120F for me.

Damn, I tried things explained on this page : Linux: Dell Laptop Fan Control And Get CPU Temperature And it works fine, the only problem is that it is not explained howx to make it automatic... the manual control works, but is immediatly override by the daemon in fact.

I'm surprised no solutions have been found following this tools ? This ie really pissing me off :/

I had a Dell intervention few mounth ago, and he already put me new termal grease ; damn, 48°C for your computer, that's a huge difference with mine :/

Something I find strange is that after I just wake up the computer, the fan is off of course, and it stay off for a long time, at least until it reaches 65°C, but when it starts, it rather never stops, even if it reaches 52°C... I don't really understand how it works :/

Yup, that's what I mean by not practical/reliable. I think this is what i8kfangui did and it's effectively useless for fan control after the Dx30 series.

There are other things like the Fn 1 2 3 4 5 diagnostic panel (I don't remember what the exact shortcut is), but I don't know if it works with E6x10 series, and it's also not automated.

... and that's what I mean when I say the fan control is really not well done; I definitely experience similar issues with E6x00 series machines as well.

Like I've searched down every alley with this Dell fan control business before, and there's nothing. The main reason I use ThinkPads right now because there is reliable fan control software, and that's important to me.

You will want to use better grease, and also apply it correctly. OEM grease tends to harden and be too thick.

Damn it, so there seem there is no solution...

Actually, I'm close to 51-54° right now, with a normal using and powersaving mode, but the fan is still almost always ON, I'm getting mad about that... Seems that I have not choice but take it as it is :-/

I'll try to change thermal grease on day, but I'm affraid I'll have to unmount everything, do not like this.
