Fortunately, on most E-series laptops, the grease is easy to change. Just remove the bottom panel and remove the heatsink.

I believe Windows has better power-saving capabilities, and I would probably run Linux as a VM instead.

My 3 year e6410 wont boot. It is just passed the dell warrantee but I will call them to see if it is extended.
I get the dell bios screen, then a blank black screen with no harddrive light flashing. I can get into the bios (selecting options in bios is somewhat laggy but I dont remember if this is normal). I tried holding power button with no battery and tried to boot 100 times, same blank screen. Only 1 time did it boot into windows successfully.
I put hd on another laptop and it passed diagnostics. I tried a different (blank) hdd in the e6410- no difference. I removed ram and replaced with different- nothing. I can change boot order but it will not boot from windows 8 dvd, same blank screen
When it boots the her spins up, so does dvd, hdd light flashes a few times, dell screen shows up then blank screen and no indicator lights. The keyboard backlight works and it seems the cpu gets hot really fast. I tried extrrnal monitor and same thing. Looks like video card is working (?) Because it displays bios screen and settings. Mouse works in bios setting screen.
    And ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Can you get to the F12 boot menu? Try booting from DVD or USB.

I have a Latitude D630 which is a wonderful machine, but is getting slow processor wise. So I am looking for a 14" machine to replace my beloved D630 with. I have been looking at the E4310 and the E6410. I am thinking that the E6410 with it's higher resolution of 1400x900 is the better choice over the E4310's 1366x768. However...

What I am mainly after is a portable machine to complement my beastly E6520.

So both the E4310 and the E6410 offer what I am looking for on my must have list: backlit keyboard, iSeries CPU, low weight. But what about heat? I would think that due to it's smaller size, the E4310 might run hotter, but then again I could be wrong.

So help me figure this one out. As for funding it, once I make my decision - I am hoping to either sell my M4500 or trade it for the machine I want. Anyways, thanks in advance guys.

The E4310 does run hotter, but probably not by much... Notebookcheck got full load temps of 89C for the E4310 and 85C for the E6410. The delta will presumably be less if you have an Nvidia E6410 too.

As long as it runs cooler than my E6520 I will be a happy camper.

My refurbished (by Dell) Latitude e6410 will not boot. It was fine last night when I shut it down. This morning when I pressed the power button, I heard it power up and Windows loaded, but by the time I got there it had shut off. After that only the power button and status light would light up, only for a few seconds then go out. I did notice that the AC cord was mostly out of the jack, so I charged it all morning. Now it appears charged, but only the power light and battery light will light up for a few seconds and go out. After a little research, I took out the battery and tried to boot on only AC; it goes to the splash screen, says "using diagnostic boot", then goes off before I can do anything. I also took out the battery, disconnected AC, and held down the power button for a few seconds, with no effect. I expected it would be the battery, but apparently not. I have only had it a few months. It has never been dropped. I did see it turn off once last week when it was too hot, but was fine after that. Ideas?
    Thanks!
