I've got a brand new E6410 and i did a clean Windows 7 x64 install. Problem is that the keypad is not working properly. Its almost not working at all. If i sweep my finger from left to right the cursor moves 4 mm on the screen. If i'm lucky that is. Most of the time it doesnt move at all just to skip 4-5cm at once.

Its not a hardware issue as it works in miniXP from Hirens boot cd and in the system bios. I've use the latest driver available from Dell and i've tried to fiddle with all the settings in Dell's touchpad utility. I've flashed the bios to A10 and all the drivers are the latest from dell.com

Unfortunatly i never tried the factory W7 install as i formatted the hdd right from the start so i dont know if the touchpad was working properly in the factory config.

It has to be a driver issue causing the problem but where can i find alternate drivers?

If you're seeing 3.82GB, you probably have Intel graphics. There is some reserved memory for the integrated graphics.

unclewebb, what version is your graphics driver? My E6410 has always been stable, although I've never used Dell video drivers (I always use the latest from Nvidia). I'm using 280.26 from Nvidia right now, and my last graphics crash was from rapidly opening several files in Photoshop while a VM was running in VMware. Of course, that didn't really surprise me since so much was going on and over 60% of 8GB RAM was in use.

I haven't had any stability issues during office work, nor heard of any problems from the two E6410's that I have deployed...IMO, these are very good laptops and I'm quite happy.

havent had crashes or erratic behavior with any of the video drivers. dell or nvidia generics...i do however find the dell oem drivers more optimized and lighter on my system.

The nvidia drivers add a couple seconds to my startup.

Has anyone had any problems resuming from hibernate? had to turn it off the system would just get stuck on a blank screen, other times resume would take an extra 30 or so seconds compared to other systems

It probably wouldnt have mattered though. Now i've tried different bios versions and running A10 atm. Then i started all over with a fresh Windows 7 x64 install, installed "Intel chipset software installation utility" and then "IDT92HDxxx HD Audio" followed by "Intel QM57QS57 NB Gfx - Intel GMA HD" and finally the "Dell Multi-Touch Touchpad". The touchpad works right up til i've rebooted the system after installing the touchpad driver. This is where it goes pear-shaped. After rebooting the touchpad is back acting up :realmad:

All drivers are the latest available from dell.com except the touchpad driver. I'm trying out the version you linked to (A08) as i struck out earlier with A10.

Its obviously nothing wrong with the hardware. My only idea is to do a clean Windows install, just install wlan-drivers and run windows update and then install drivers.

btw, I could be imagining but it feels as if the pointstick became a bit sluggish about the same time as the touchpad "stopped working".

Anyone got an idea what to do?

Ok, so now i've done another reinstall and updated windows before i installed any drivers. Then i installed the touchpad driver from windows update instead. But still the same problem. At first i thought i'd cracked it but all of a sudden the touchpad started lagging again. The problem comes and goes. I've also discovered the keys on the left part of the keyboard seems to be misaligned and are clicking a bit different. Btw the keyboard is not horizontally straight, it looks more like a wave or a w.

Anyway back to the touchpad issue. Someone please give me some advice what to do about the touchpad issue before i throw this piece of **** in the trash :(

EDIT: To be super pedagogical the touchpad basically works as long as i dont install any drivers and windows identifies it as a standard mouse. As soon as i install any alps and/or dell specific drivers the touchpad starts lagging heavily and becomes unusable. And as i want the touchpad to be fully functional i of course need to install some sort of drivers.

although it might not seem to be hardware right now this has me puzzled because the drivers i posted work/have been working flawlessly for me quite some time now.

if possible i would try to reset the palmrest area
