E6400 overheating throttling

    Definitely not. Under normal usage (10 to 20% CPU utilisation) my fan runs maybe 50% of the the time. However, the P series CPU doesn't produce much heat.

    But you still have disabled some automatic functions with RMClock to prevent the throttling, right? By the way, doesnt that affect other things?. Do still have the same batterytime and low temps with the RMClock set to 100% throttling"?

    1. I disabled the throttling setting in RMClock nearly 2 weeks ago when I installed A15 to see whether I would still get throttling. So far, no problems.

    2. RMClock uses about 2% of CPU time in running. Perhaps not running this software could stretch my battery time further but, since I also undervolt and run a performance on demand profile, the extra power used when under low load is offset by the reduced power used whenever the CPU speeds up.

    Here is a logfile from RM Clock graphed, in the end had to turn it off to make the system usable again.

    EDIT: I actually dont have this issue, it is ONLY when I try to open 3 or 4 250-300MB Excel spreadsheets while having a dvd playing, while defraging my HDD and compiling code..... only then do I get the throttling issue, and I am expecting Dell to tell me to get a desktop if I want to do high powered activities, meh might wait to call them about the heat/throttling issue until it becomes a bigger impact, but for now, just wont try to have 50ty billion apps open at once.

    Call me king of the graphs, here is another. I wanted to see what triggered my fan to sit on full all the time, so turned on I8kfanGUI to auto start and turned my laptop off and left it for ~15mins and turned it back on. It was connected to the E-Dock and I went about my normal business.

    I have scaled the speed and fan speed down, (divided by 100), so that they would all fit in the same range.

    As you can see, the fan is Off when the system boots up and starts to be used. It looks like the chipset triggers the fan to Slow when it hits 65oC. Then the fan is triggered to High when the Memory temp get to 50oC.

    From then on the fan sits there all day on high with the CPU temps range between 45-65oC, the GPU 45-50oC, the Memory 50oC, the Chipset 60-85oC and the hard drive 43oC.

    Has anyone else monitored their temps? Are these temps normal, or within normal boundaries? Is the fan really supposed to sit on High all day long?

    I can use the laptop normally without any throttling, until I start really pushing the CPU with lots of applications and number crunching. Still, I would have thought games/dvd's would stress the system out, which is something I dont really do is play games, so maybe I would experiance the throttling issue worse if I were to play games?

    EDIT: I just had a thought, I have 4GB of RAM, in 2 RAM chips, would this affect the temps at all?

    Can you test your system once more without the dock station.

    In my case (no docks), the fan doesn't run ALL the time. But it does run here and there.. ESPECIALLY when Flash content is at work, or doing anything intensive (CPU and/or GPU)

    That is useful work, particularly the identification of the different chipset and memory trigger temperatures. I'll try to do something similar.

    2 modules will use slightly more power than one, but a 2GB module will have similar power consumption from 1GB. Different brands of RAM may have slightly different power consumptions, which could be a factor.

    I'll try to get this done either later today or tomorrow morning, good thinking, I forgot to repeat the same process without the dock. I will also try to only use the same programs that I used in the above test too, that way the tests should be relatively the same, the only major difference will be the dock.
