E6230 Owners Thread

Hey folks,

I figured since every other model has a thread that the E6230 should deserve its own!

How many of us are out there?!

 

I've bought a few, and I use one personally. Useful upgrade over the E6220 from a battery life point of view, and better with Windows 8 now they've finally released working 5550 3G card drivers!

 

Nice! What kind of battery life are you working with? And what capacity?

My e6230 is coming in next week with a 3cell I'm hoping its nice lol

 

I have a refurbished i7 with SSD and corsair vengeance 1866 16gb memory. Battery is 6cell and with just browsing online I can get around 5 to 6 hours. I also installed a 3G Huawei modem purchased from eBay and it works great with Windows 8.
Some games work pretty well on it such as dota 2 or other source games. Diablo 3 is also ok.
Heat is great for the power and noise is very well handled.
I would have loved a IPS screen like the one on the Lenovo x230.

Wow the 1866 works on this comp? I heard it only works on a handful of laptops
The battery life sounds good on a 6 cell! Unfortunately I got a 3 cell...
Have you attempted to reapply thermal paste to the CPU? I think that is one of the first things I plan on doing.

 

I just received a refurbished 6320 with i5 and 6 cell.

When I looked inside it appears there is a slot for mSATA. Has anyone put mSata into one of these?

 

From what I know there is no msata support on the 6230. 1866 vengeance memories work great and allow the iGPU to push better since it has more bandwidth. There is noticeable improvement in games after replacing the stock 2x2 GB 1600.

I have brought one with 6 cell battery(58 whr - 3 year warranty) . Not sure if it is any better than regular 65 whr battery.

As far as speed goes, my laptop can already run Bioshock, Starcraft 2 and few other recent games in playable FPS w/ low and medium setting. Oh and this doesn't throttle while on battery!!

Overall, I love this little thing. so much lighter and faster than my 3 years old Envy 15


No msata SSD support. tried with 2 different msata drives.

 

man that stinks. I looked around the internet and yea... the msata isnt supported... those extra slots are for 3g/4g and other mpci cards

On the side note, has anyone reapplied thermal paste to their e6230? If so, what were your temperatures before and after? (A program like hwmonitor can view your temps)

If you guys haven't repasted, what temperatures are you guys idling and loading it?

Im trying to decide if I want to take the time to reapply thermal paste...

 

The Core i5/i7 CPUs used in these systems do not support more than 1600MHz DDR3 memory, desktop machines may support this through overclocking but a Dell laptop will not. If you go into the BIOS setup under system info you will see the speed that the memory is running at, and it will not be higher than 1600MHz. Your system may still benefit from the lower latencies of high end RAM if the system has support for it. The last couple of generations of CPUs are not that sensitive to memory bandwidth or latency in any case, even if it did work a performance increase in the order of 1 - 4% would be the most you could hope for. Any speed improvement seen with these will be from increasing the amount of RAM. 4GB isn't enough for playing games as the iGPU will pinch a load of the RAM right off the bat.

Battery life is noticeably better than the E6220 and I would say it actually makes the 3 cell battery viable. I get around 3 - 3.5 hours from mine using the 3 cell battery and about 5 -6 using the 6 cell. With the 96WHr battery slice it'll comfortably last 14+ hours.

You can pick up 5550 HSPDA+ cards to go in the WWAN slot if your laptop didn't come with one, and the performance with these can be superb. In the UK with Vodafone I regularly see 600 - 800K/Sec steady download speeds. The antenna are located in the screen behind the plastic trim bit above the latch and you can usually get a far better signal than with a USB key.

If I were to buy any of the last two generations of latitudes with my own money I would always get the 3 year warranty batteries. The latest batteries seem to last 12 - 18 months before complaining about lifespan and seeing substantially reduced capacity. These are users who had the same battery for 3+ years in other laptops without issue, so usage pattern is not to blame. Not sure if by pushing the energy density so high they have sacrificed too much longevity?
