I'm sure that SEC is Samsung. Samsung notebooks usually have SEC panels.

Anyway, the main thing is that you are happy with the display. I recall that 6 months back there were adverse comments about the Samsung panels. Perhaps something has been improved.

The Nvidia driver in Kubuntu reports it as Seiko. Are Seiko and Samsung under one umbrella?

Seiko Epson Corporation and Samsung Electronics Company are both SEC.

However, I don't think Seiko make notebook display panels whereas Samsung are one of the big producers. SEC may mean Seako Epson in the context of some other hardware.

The first post in this thread assumes that SEC = Samsung and we know that Dell uses Samsung, LG and at least one other brand (CMO?) of panels in the E6400.

how much battery life would an LED display save compared to the non-LED?

I don't recall seeing any power drain figures for the E6400 with CCFL display. Potentially it could turn 5 hours into 6 hours at best, or add half an hour at worst.

Also, at full brightness, the LED backlights are much brighter, which makes working outside more feasible.

I can attest to the working outside. I've been out on the patio almost every day for the past week since the weather got nice and the brightness level is very comfortable as long as there isn't direct sun over head.

Plus, the screen has the matte finish. It is really a shame that most laptops now have glossy screens. You pretty much have to buy a business laptop to get matte. Glossy just adds to the eyestrain and the reflections can be very distracting, even with indoor lighting. I wish more manufacturers provided both finishes as a configuration option.

But, at least with the glossy nobody can sneak up behind you. That's why I take my Macbook out with me when I'm working away from home ;)

i'm buying a used E6400 and the guy says it has an LED display, so if it's matte, he's telling the truth but if it's glossy it's the non-LED display?

All E6400's have a matte display. Before buying it, I'd suggest you get the service tag and look it up at Dell's support page. It'll tell you the type of screen.

i had an lg panel and thought it was good head-on and for anything but video, was ok. but with video, the vertical viewing angles were horrible.

Hey guys i got mine e6400 with 1280x800 resolution, hardware id is AUO5344.
Im not happy with angle view and quaility of the colours.

Reading this post it seems that LG and samsungs are quite good.

Question: Where do i actually buy new screens and how hard is it to replace it yourself?
