If you can wait until September or October then wait, if not I'd suggest looking to purchase another model...

I can buy them through my college, who told me that they expect to receive their orders around August 15.

The only thing that's turning me off is that I don't know if it has a pencil eraser tip in addition to the touch pad. From the pictures, I can't see one, but does that mean anything? Do all the other latitudes have pencil erasers?

I just ordered an E6500 through my college. Here are the specs

    For $2129
    Latitude E6500
    15.4" WUXGA wide aspect screen
Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53 GHz) processor with 1066 MHz front side bus and 6 megabytes of L2 cache
    4 gigabyte RAM, 2 DIMMS
160 gigabyte, 7200 RPM hard drive
256 megabyte NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M video
    8X DVD multiburner
    Intel 4965 wireless, 802.11a/g/n
    90 watt AC adapter
    9-cell battery
    5.7 pounds
    Microsoft VISTA Ultimate operating system

Keep in mind the price might be higher because my college is giving me the following items as well as a 4-year warranty plan:
    Microsoft Office Profession 2007 Plus
    Fellows Mighty 8 Surge Protector
    25' Ethernet cable
    6' notebook security cable
    Mobile Edge Slip Suit

The E6400 specs are barely worse, and it is $1739.

Actually, I'm surprised that they're still using the Quadro 140M. Shouldn't there be a newer version by now?

Wow that is really expensive. But I am sure that price can be dropped by a few hundred if you did not upgrade the ram to 4gb, downgrade the optical drive and processor. It will still be about $1300 probably which is still out of reach for most people.
