That solution is not always the best.Most likely it will create a lot of lag into the external screen.Just my 2 cents

 

Is there a different gpu upgrade path for the 3d vision edp screen on these? What I mean is are some of the cards that normally you couldn't put in the lvds version a possible fit for this? I can't really find any real details of the 3d vision capable version of the m6700, too old I guess. Never caught on obviously but there are collectors of such things which is great for resale.

I'm still waiting to receive it and I hope the dell service tag is accurate. I had to specifically ask for it (since so many sellers seem to be clueless as to putting in full specs for $xxx items, ridiculous). I already notice he didn't use an accurate pic since the tag says fingerprint reader but the pic doesn't have one. All he put in there was i7 3ghz, 32 gb ram, 500gb hdd, and that's it as a description, pulling teeth to get a response for details. Since I've owned a cpu extreme version I noticed the extreme sticker in the pic and that's what got my interest in it.

 

I rarely did that with my last m6700 so not too big of a deal really. 17" pretty large when you're sitting at a desk. Worst case would be vga output and using headphones for audio.

 

It's basically the same. For newer cards that do not support LVDS, you have a choice of LVDS panel + Optimus, or an eDP panel (without Optimus, because you can't use Optimus with eDP in this system). GPU compatibility is basically the same. A difference would be, cards like the Tesla which do not support display output at all will not work with an eDP panel.

 

Hm thanks. I have the option either way because of the old one I've still got lying around so I could convert it to lvds. Not interested in spending as much or more than the whole laptop price on a gpu upgrade though. It comes with a k4000m from the service tag so there is some value there to be used to trade up.

 

At this point the mxm prices are way out of reality per their performance level it's just not worth it, only when some really great deal comes along is it worth it in mxm laptops. For the same price as the whole system plus the mxm card you're not too far off a new gtx1650 laptop or used gtx1070 laptop in some cases. All with modern cpu's, ram and less wear. People still try to sell 780m's for 200$ ridiculous.

 

Don't be afraid to use the "make an offer" option on eBay, you'll find sellers willing to sell the cards for a good bit below the listed price (with some patience).

 

I usually do if the price of a card is more or not too much less than a whole new computer with an updated card that's about the same. Never had any luck, had more luck on whole laptops more than mxm cards. From what I'm seeing gaming laptops on ebay are a mess, people are selling and bidding on 1050ti etc for not much less than 1070+ level laptops it's crazy. The same big sale laptop specs i5-9300H, 8gb ram, gtx 1650 you can get at walmart for 589 is up there in an omen wrapper for $800 and people are buying it. 980m laptops are terribly priced as well, buying new isn't much difference in value anymore. EB in that segment is like amazon, total ripoff.

 

If it really is a 3dvision screen I'm most likely going to keep it in there rather than move the lvds screen I have over. 3dvision screens are 120hz which is nice and was way ahead of its time. Just have to get a card that can do it justice. The tech is abandoned though but I think if you use win7 and an old driver it can still work with the nvidia glasses if you can find them and the content that supported it. I'm not interested, but the 120hz is nice to have and it also comes with the rf emitter in the msata slot.

 

You can use 120 Hz with any card, but getting 3D Vision to work will require that you use either K3000M, K4000M, or K5000M; NVIDIA has some DRM stuff in play, or something, and it will not allow 3D Vision to work if there is an "unsupported" GPU in the system (which requires a driver INF modification).
