Right so aside from people trying to sell their old junk here instead of the proper market forums, I'm going to go with my previous plan because apart from some french fry guessing about the P4000 there is no reliable data about it's compatibility on the m6700.

 

anyone tried any of the reasonably price Radio pro WX7100 mxm 3.0b cards on ebay? I've found in the past AMD cards had better future compatibility with older mxm 3.0b devices.

Yes it's plug and play, just need an inf modding (as long as the right vbios is already flashed on it), it should work on LVDS/VGA throught optimus, with optimus disabled LVDS and VGA will not work.
It's working with no issue on my M6700 with eDP 4k display, only VGA is not working because optimus is disabled by default (HD4000 can't drive the eDP display), I'm selling it because I don't use my M6700 that much anymore.

 

That's a BIG difference from just inf modding if you can't flash it when it's installed in the laptop so no it's not plug and play. You'd have to either have an external way to flash or from what I've understood install linux and then flash it. It's an important difference to just casual users that would make buying a high cost item just not worth it. 97/80m just install do inf modding, done.

 

You don't have to install Linux, just boot it (you can easily boot Linux from a DVD or USB drive). It's really not terribly hard to do if you have a passing familiarity with Linux. However, this is for the M6800, not M6700 — the M6700 cannot boot any OS with a Pascal GPU installed (without a good vBIOS).

 

it's not a pain in the ass, just buy a CH314A with 1.8v adapter (~10 bucks on ebay, super usefull for everything for saving nearly all thing with corrupt bios or whatever), install drivers and the programmer software, plug the clip on the programmer and on the eeprom of the card, select the eeprom reference in the database, read the bios to save it (in case something wrong), then open the working vbios, click on "auto" and the programmer will automaticaly flash the bios, that's 5 min.
After that install the card and wait for it to boot (could last 2min if legacy oprom are enabled), go to bios and force full UEFI everywhere (or you would have to wait 2min each time you boot) and then it's working like a 980M for the rest...

Considering the cost of a CH341a programmer with 1.8v adapter and the time it take, it's pretty free, there is no soldering to do, it's just flash vbios, force uefi in bios, plug and play

There is no risk using such programmer, it's like writing something on a USB stick..

 

eh pass, the cost of the card is not any savings over your average 980m costs and you'd have to do all that extra work and cost. My context was clearly just nvflash after install or inf modding not all that other stuff.

 

So I've been pretty involved with my m4600 and m6600 but I want something with a stronger GPU and the m4600 will take at max like a Firepro M5100. The m6600 has a bad screen that is basically unfixable (screen originally broken, bought cheap used replacement, replacement's grounding pins on display connector detached and shorted/busted LVDS connector and a new RGB LED panel is not worth the hassle in that machine). Therefore, I'm in the market for a m6700 and have found a potential laptop that I like, but the seller says the screen won't turn on. Seems like either the screen is dead or the seller didn't put RAM in it (as the listing doesn't come with any RAM). Regardless, I may be willing to put in the cash to replace the screen with the covet/red edition display assembly, but the only ones I can find are for the red m6800s. Luckily, the screws, connector placement and display standard (eDP) are identical. Is there anything else that may restrict this display swap if it is needed?

(Note: I already have a M6100 from the m6600 project in case the GPU is dead)

 

you can't use covet screen from M6800 on the M6700, eDP connection is different, screen is also different (30 vs 40pins eDP). Also there is not point getting the covet edition unless you want touchscreen, if you wish to, you can install (I think) whatever 40pins eDP display on the M6700, for exemple I'm running a 4k screen on mine (you need a special "3D cable")
