Dell Precision M6700 Owners Thread

Heym any ideas of lowering the temperatures in the m6700 casing? I've got the i7 3940XM and a GTX970M and they both go up to nearly 80 degrees while gaming. I have some spare thermopads (don't know the brand) and I've also used pretty decent paste recently. Still getting that overheating problem in ME Andromeda and other modern titles.

 

Clean the fan and heatsink fins and bottom case holes. If you are using dock station ok a bit. If just laptop, either lift the laptop higher using a book at bottom of LCD or using cooling fan. I use Coolermaster U3 Plus with dock station. It helps a bit on the temperature. using IC diamond paste, most difficult applied paste i have ever come across.

80°C is common on heavy load. It can go higher if u try burn in test.

With all these, my M5000M still KO 2 days ago, donno what happen, only less than a year, have to temporary use back old 680m. Now aiming for 7720 or upcoming CPU/GPU Clevo.

 

My system hops up into the 80's under load. I don't think it's a big deal, it can operate up to near 100 before you run into trouble. I don't get any throttling.

 

I asked about the temperatures because my laptop freezes or shuts down when I'm playing a game. Sometimes it goes on for a looong time and at times it just crashes and reboots itself (tested on Cities Skylines and Rise of the Tomb Raider). I also get a weird screen resolution when launching the machine sometimes when it was disconnected from the PSU but a restart fixes the problem. I thought maybe it is the temperatures or maybe it's something with the MXM slot - should I reattach the GPU again?

Also, another question here - does the bottom panel door from M6600 fit an M6700? They look fairly similar on pictures, with some minor differences around the battery compartment.

 

80s shouldn't be a problem at all, I agree. I ran my M6700 to much higher temps and didn't run into any issues and we're talking > 24 hours of running it non stop.

Did you log the temperatures or manually checked them. A log file might reveal something you missed. Temperatures in the 80s shouldn't be an issue. It is possible that some part of your CPU or GPU isn't making proper contact with the heatsink and it isn't picked up by the temperature sensors. There is something going on for certain.

 

I believe I might have used too few of that thermal compound. I was recently repairing my girlfriend's laptop's LCD cover and had to repaste the CPU and the GPU afterwards and it suffered some temperature issues afterwards. Using more of that paste made it work properly again. I'll look into temp logs and report back here.

 

Is M6700 speakers stereo or mono? I test under windows "Playback Device" > "Configure", only left channel got sound

 

Just confirmed both left and right channels are working here (and clearly coming from different sides of the speaker "bar")... suspect you have a speaker that has gone out :-\

 

It might also be the speaker connector - you can find it under the keyboard on the left side of the palmrest. Try cleaning it carefully and look for any signs of wear.

 

I earlier thought the speaker is faulty, just bought another new one installed and still the same . Could be the connector at mainboard side is dirty/damaged. it is so small.
