Dell Precision M6700 Owners Thread

Not sure if the M6700 Nvidia heatsink is compatible with the AMD card (I think the AMD M6000 came with a different one, the main difference being the GPU core height so the heatsink was bulged to fit the AMD core; I'd expect the M290X to follow the same design as M6000?).

According to notebookcheck, the M290X gets around 6500 points in 3DMark11. IIRC, I used to overclock my K4000M GPU core to 900 MHz (and also memory by some margin) and I got around 5500 points there (and it could have been overclocked even more).

IMHO, the M290X upgrade is not worth it, I'd rather hunt for somebody replacing their 970M (which also overclocks nicely to match stock 980M performance).

 

I saw a M6700 with HD 7870M and a M6600 with R9 M280x on eBay so I think heatsink is not the problems.

According to notebook check, R9 M290x is near to high-end class which is comparable with 880M. I think we can't buy 970M with under 200$ ATM, I've tried to search from many sellers in Taiwan and China but still no luck .

 

This may be off topic but it is it possible to run Oculus Rift VR on this laptop. Received on as a gift and cannot get it to work.

I'm not saying it's a problem, but if someone has the Nvidia card on their M6700 (H5CG5), for an AMD card they also need to source a new heatsink as they're different (9MFH6).

Comparing the position of the card on the notebookcheck list rather than e.g. a 3dMark score is a rather unusual approach. I prefer to stick to the proven methods where 880M scores 8500 points in 3dMark 11 compared to 6500 of the M290X.

 

There are two different GPU heatsinks used in the M6700.

It might be possible to use an Oculus Rift with this system, but the experience would likely be rather poor. The M6700 does not meet the requirements detailed by Oculus, which call for a fourth-gen Intel Core CPU, and more importantly, a high-end NVIDIA Maxwell-based GPU (or equivalent AMD GPU). The M6700 has a third-gen CPU which would probably be OK, but on the GPU side, even the K5000M is not fast enough for VR.

 

Yeap I know. It's just the refer number. I mean while 880M - 970M are still expensive, M290x can be considered most valueable replacement for my K3000M

 

Oh, K3000M? Yeah, that makes sense. I don't know why I assumed you had K4000M, sorry.

K3000M can be overclocked well, too, but it will reach up to 4000 points in 3dMark 11 (compared to 5500 for the overclocked K4000M and 6500 for the M290X).

1 more thing: how about Firepro M6100? I'm watching a deal with a standalone MXM Firepro M6100 card only for 99$ .

 

At stock clocks it gives around 5500 points according to notebookcheck. Though, it seems the Dell one is somewhat underclocked by default so you might need to flash the vBIOS to get these numbers as described here:

Thank you for the feedback I have the Quadro K4000 and the extreme processor. Oh well in will just sell the rift.
