I managed to install a GTX 780m into my m6700 and it works, sort of. I bought this card from a previous Alienware 17 owner who has that card laying around for sale.

However the X-bracket of the 780m protrudes a lot by around 2-3mm I think, while my old firepro m6000's X-bracket is flat almost at the same level of the card itself. The elevation caused by X-bracket raised my heatsink at a similar height, although I can put thicker thermal pad on VRAM and VRM modules but it's impossible to put that much grease on my GPU chip/die.

Could anyone confirm that the Quadro cards (K3000/4000/5000m) has all the X-bracket that elevates a couple of millimeters like my 780m does. I am thinking of ordering a Nvidia heatsink. But if Quadro cards have the X-bracket that are not protruding as my firepro card there's no point for me to order another heatsink.

Or if there's a way I can swap the X-bracket from my firepro card into my 780m instead?

I replaced my Firepro with a Quadro K4000M and it was an exact replacement. No problem with the X-bracket, it was no higher than the Firepro. Also, you should be able take the X-bracket from the firepro and put it on 780M. The first K4000 that I tried (and didn't work due to its ROM FW) didn't have an X-bracket and I just used the Firepro bracket

Use hair drier to warm x-braket and screw 4 srews into holes to push 2 pposite screws, then another 3 while using drier from below.

My dell m6700 with the IPS display makes this high frequency sound whenever the display is on. I know the sound goes away because I use monitor off to turn of the display whenever I leave my laptop. It is clearly audible in a quiet environment but not loud enough to be heard over the fans when running. Is this normal? It's kinda ignoring. I noticed others with the tips display also have this problem. Is there a fix? How loud is acceptable?

    Hi,

Now it happenend to me: after more than 4 years of daily usage of my M6700 Covet I had 2 cracks on the gorilla glas.
DELL accepts this as a fault on their side but it seems they don't have spare parts for the phoenix red display. I offered to go for grey if available (but the Covet was always red, wasn't it?)
Waiting for final info from service rep...

    Cheers,
    Alex

Eh, pretty sure that the covet was indeed always red, and that's the only model that had the glass-covered display...
On top of that, I don't think any of the more recent models have a glass-covered display like the M6700/Covet had.

We are pretty sure that the GeForce 10 series will not work, but I have not seen anyone who has tried it. It will definitely not work without Optimus turned on, because these cards do not support LVDS, they cannot drive the laptop display directly.

Your best bet will be the GeForce 980M or Quadro M5000M, which are both confirmed working.
