Agggh! That's more than the cost of the 27" QHD display! It also terrifying to hear something like that just because of a real bad design.

It reminds me of many of the newer car designs and their bumper/light assemblies. A minor bump or cracked housing and you have to replace the entire assembly. Hopefully, there's a used parts dealer somewhere that can sell you a replacement screen and make it a bit more pitiable. I hope someone will comment with that good news.

I don't know for sure whether this can be done on the Precision the way it could be done on the edge-to-edge Alienwares, but you might try to remove the glass from the LCD display beneath it. And you end up with a nice matte display free of charge...

Umm, kinda thinking that's a little more recycled than I'm comfortable with. Maybe after 3 or 4 years though?

I understand the feeling, but what has he got to lose? Certainly not USD 700...

Without having to go through hundreds of pages looking for this, ill just ask. (sorry)

Can the 6700 be upgraded to an RGB screen from the stock matte display? If so, what are the part numbers I need to find in order to do this?

Is there such a beast as the edge to edge display as on my Precision m6400?

    Thanks!

I hope you can help me and I didn't juust brick my m6700!

I decided to use my m6700 to try out WIndows 8.1. I booted it from Microsoft MSDN DVD, it started to install. I selected the UEFI secure boot option from the menu. As there was nothing of value on the laptop, I deleted and recreated a fresh partition for the fresh install. The install began.

UI cam back about 15 minutes later, and it was on the initial screen again - it had me again, type the product ID, and other intiial stuff in. I noticed however that the screen was low res, like it was not n UEFI mode. So when it got to the parition screen, I cleared out and recreated the partition again, but then eixted, and booted to BIOS - there I set the UEFI Secure boot option - thinking, I had a Windows 8 DVD/CD that I could boot from all is fine. Wrong!

The system will not boot from the CD - I guess that is not considered a secure OS!. But, I have not been able to get back into the BIOS. WHen I power on, I just get a black screen - with or without the CD in. I have tried:

    1. Pressing F2 repeatedly
    2. Pressing F12 repeatedly
    3. Seeing if it would show on a external monitor
    4. Taking out the CMOS, pressing power button several times to discharge, and putting it back in
    5. Taking out the CMOS chip, letting it sit 30 minutes, pressing the power switch.

Is there any way I can recover?

I have also tried taking out the CMOS battery for 3 hours, removing the RAM and disk drive, still all I get is a black screen after it restarts 3 times (all with black screen - never see Dell logo). I hit the F2 and F12 keys repeatedly too.

Please help if you can, thanks!

Well first, don't panic. I've had similar issues with my HDX and my Precision and both were resolve without incident. The first one turned out to be a faulty connection in the battery of my HDX and the machine would not even turn on. I mean nothing like I wasn't even pushing the power button. Once I removed the battery, the machine started as normal. The second time I followed your procedure and removed the battery and held the power button for 30 seconds but that was it.

After that, my Precision has started as usual and hadn't need to be sent in for repairs in the 14 months I've had it. I did however boot from the eSTAT where I backed up my OS to an external HDD (Did you do this?) then tried the procedure again this time using Acronis which I downloaded using my HDX and everything updated as expected.

Thing is, I panicked too when my machine went dead, but it just turned out to be user error. Since then I've installed the full version of Acronis. Since I'm not good at working under the hood, so its simplified automation was worth it to me. Wish I could get you up and running, but consulation is all I can offer. Someone with more experience will have to help you further.

Thanks for the reply Krane, but I am not sure all the advice applies (thanks for the don't panic though - feels like I have a brick now :))

I have a wiped disk - maybe not any partitions, I can't remember any more. I Just want to install from CD/DVD - it won't. It won't go into BIOS or show anything on the screen at all. I have disconnected the CMOS battery disc for hours, and it doesn't help.

How do I boot into BIOS to turn off UEFI/Secure boot, or boot from CD, so I can install? If I can't do either, it's a brick.

    Thanks.
