There should be a fair amount of resistance but you shouldn't have to manhandle it. I open mine completely (flat) periodically to clean the display. But other than that, I haven't had the need to do any maintenance whatsoever.

No extra resistance than normal from my 6700. Also no sounds, clicks or similar from hinges. Disassemble it and see what is wrong. You can grab manual from dell If I remember correctly.

Any suggestions for the following symptoms? Thanks in advance.

The laptop screen is blank at all times (possibly even no back light).
Secondary screen has been detached for testing but apparently did display Windows loading info before the computer crashes

    1. Hard Drive indicates Windows is loading (confirmed because it always pauses where the "Start Windows Normally" prompt would occur and resumes when Enter is pressed)
    2. Caps lock and key back light are adjustable during boot
    3. Fn Key to switch monitor config has no effect
    4. Hangs at some point and nothing further, hard power off required

The primary issue is to get the main laptop screen working again.

Secondary is to figure out why Windows is crashing, I'm not requesting a diagnosis on that for obvious reasons.

    Thanks

Try dissasembly if you are out of warranty and removing gpu and thus running only on integrated gpu.

From what i understood he connected external monitor at one point but system crashed as desktop started loading. If system crashes once driver start to load i would point into faulty gpu or at least rule it out first by taking it out and trying to run the system only on integrated.

I had black screen on E6520, it was loose lcd cable. Screen just would not turn on. Worth checking also, to take everything onto account.

The problem seems to be nothing comes up on the screen, not even the Dell Logo. External monitor does not help. I have removed RAM and disk drive It just seems to have hosed up the video display. Am I dead?

During your tests, were the messages "Checking Disk" echoing to the display. Did it actually display any text on the screen? If so, there is obviously still communication between the board and screen, and since it still powers on, seems like the BIOS has been corrupted. You probably have a few options here (rather than just a very expensive paperweight). You can can contact dell support and try to get them to walk you through flashing the BIOS somehow (can pay for the service if your out of warranty), or source a new motherboard on ebay. Pretty sure you could find one. Your CPU, Graphics card, and all the daughter boards are probably still okay. Could be a nice little refurbish project (unplanned and unfortunate), or you can sell it for a couple hundred on ebay as "not working, for parts" and start over.
