Hi! How many hours? Sometimes it can take close to a day. Be sure you remove the regular battery and the adapter cord as well (I don't want to insult you, but it happens). Also, if possible, remove a memory sodimm and start without it. Also make sure you do not have anything connected to the USB and eSATA ports.

Thanks landsome for the reply, most of this I have not, but not all the same time - I now have it turned off, I may go 2 days to be sure. I pulled a ram simm out. I did have a USB connector for wireless mouse I pulled out. Nothing is connected. Fingers crossed, I'll report back!

Well, I went 2.5 days with everything unplugged, no USB or other connections, CMOS and regular battery out, 1 RAM chip out. I had pressed the power button a number of times in case that helped discharge any power. I put the battery back in, left the RAM out so maybe that would trigger an error, booted up, and - nothing. Not a thing shows up on the screen. First time it went on and off twice, then came on a little longer, say 5 seconds, accessing the disk, then shut off. Its like there is no BIOS there! I tried hitting F2, then F12, nothing. I put a Win 8.1 CD in there, it checked the CD, but still nothing.

Any other ideas, or send this laptop to recycling?

I decided to get a 1TB Samsung SSD, The 840 EVO Model Code MZ-7TE1T0BW,

I went ahead and booted to Acronis True Image USB Boot Drive. Acronis saw the new drive and I recovered my image to the new drive.

When I went to boot, the computer could not find a boot drive. I then hit F2, and there was no drive listed for the primary drive (said none).

I booted into windows using my previous drive, and hooked the 1 TB SSD to the Esta and drive is seen and all data is on it.

I tried again with the 1TB SSD in the primary slot and hit F2 and not there.

I then booted to the Acronis True Image and Acronis sees the drive.

For some reason, the system is not seeing hte drive until after either the Acronis True Image rescue is booted or after in Win 8.1.

Any ideas? Does the system not see a 1TB drive before boot?

    thanks,

    Mike

I don't know if this is gonna help but you might try it. When I was upgrading to SSD I had problems with booting. Accidentally I've noticed that I had to put SSD in slot 1 and leave original drive in slot 0. Also used acronis.

Hard to tell for sure, but everything is great after drive swap. Laptop was new when I did this upgrade. Both drives worked fine later, booting from them also. Wierd.

I am assuming the Samsung 840 EVO I got is bad.

Sometimes it is seen in the bios and sometimes it is not. Not sure what is the cause. All I can think of is a bad drive. It is weird, once in windows or using the acronis boot drive, I can see the drive every time. Using the acronis boot drive, this is with the 840 in the primary bay. Then when booting from my current 256GB boot drive and hooking up the EVO to an external reader (both esata and usb), windows sees the drive every time. It is just in the bios when in the primary slot most times it is not seen in bios and sometimes it is (tried a dozen or so times). I did not bother trying it in the second hard drive bay. I am going to assume a bad drive and send it back.

Here's a strange issue I've been having; hopefully someone else has experienced the same.

I've noticed the display hinges are 'sticking' on my M6700. Every time I move the display lid, there's a very loud 'snap'/'click' coming from the right display hinge. This is accompanied by a fair amount of resistance from that hinge. This is independent of the lid's positioning. It almost feels like the hinge lacks lubrication and is sticking somehow, but it is getting quite annoying. I've had this notebook almost a year and if anything the problem has gotten slightly worse. Warranty repair isn't an option, unfortunately. However, I'm completely comfortable with taking this beast apart, but I'd firstly like to see if a little bit of oil would clear this up. How would I go about accessing the hinge if I were to do this?

Use some Google fu to find the service manual. There are lots of helpful diagrams and pictures you can refer to.
