Try get rid of premier color software or don't let it run at all.

I'd suggest doing as Baiii said but you're saying premier isn't even installed and the problem is still there even after an NVidia driver update. No I wouldn't uninstall video driver at this point.
Start looking hard at any running programs for that "Keep Window on top" setting that some programs offer. It is either that or Windows or another program has something stuck within in its configuration file. You're the only one that has reported the problem here so it's not ubiquitous. It's definitely not hardware - doesn't care electrically what window has the focus.
BTW, does it always happen even freshly booted with just notepad and say Windows explorer running, no chrome even started?

Found this: Program Windows stuck on top - Microsoft Community

With this search: Windows 7 stuck window on top - Bing

This is a Dell M6700 laptop that uses the Optimus technology for the Intel 4000 and Nvidia K3000 video chips inside. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Your problem is caused by the "Premier Color" utility that comes installed on your computer. I have a Dell M6700 as well. If you either exit the "Premier Color" utility (running in the system tray), or uninstall it entirely, windows will stop getting stuck on top.

I ran the uninstall, restarted, and haven't had the problem since.

Installed the drive, 500 GB Samsung 840. Replacing 500 GB 7200 RPM Seagate.
Cloning the drive (about half full) using Acronis True Image took about 40 minutes.
No surprises. System boots stupid fast now. Also quieter.

Give it a week, then go back to a system with a HDD with the OS on it. Only then will you fully realize the awesomeness of a SSD, seriously it feels normal pretty fast and you don't know what you got until it's taken away. :p

Welcome to the SSD owner family by the way, been using them since 2011 and can't live without them anymore.

m6700/IPS/k4000m here... after 2 weeks of nightmares i finally fixed the horrible freeze/lockups problem and the esata that wasn't working either... it all came down to the Intel Rapid Storage driver, i had to uninstall the one coming from dell website and also the one that win 8 would install through windows update and download the proper one directly from intel's website, version 12.5.0.1066 of the Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA RAID controller that you can find under Storage Controllers section in the Device Manager of Win 8. Glad i didn't call Dell complaining about faulty hardware when it was in fact a driver issue.. And about the Premier Color software i uninstalled it and use the display in srgb which comes automagically with proper colors without calibration in win 8, no idea how but yay :D

    Aaron,

    HaHa, Stupid fast! :p
Like Tijo said the new fast will quickly feel normal.

BTW, when you cloned, was it the factory image or had you reimaged since you'd received the machine?

    Enjoy.

Yeah, I've used SSDs in other systems so I knew what to expect. Nice to have one going here in the M6700, though.

I never used the factory image. When I received the M6700, I actually cloned/transferred my install from my previous machine, so I'm using a Windows install that was first set up back almost four years ago, when Windows 7 first RTM'ed in 2009 (since upgraded to Windows 8). Naturally, I carried that install over to the SSD.

Ok, figured out the solution. After trying to reinstall the drivers a bunch of times, it's quite simple. Go to services.msc and turn the "bluetooth support service" from manual (that was my setting) to auto. Now I can restart and bluetooth will still work. Probably nobody cares, but whatever! Saved me from formatting needessly. *runs off and clicks heels in joy*

Oh, no you don't !!! We care much more than you might think we do. Your success is our success too :) If this happens to someone else and you're not here we'll know how to help now :)
Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you didn't have to reimage. Nothing worse than reimaging - especially if you spent a lot of time troubleshooting before having to go there.

Click your heels with joy - you deserve that!

    zergslayer69,

BTW, If you didn't run off to far :) I have a question, how did that get set to manual or is that the windows default and the driver app doesn't switch it over to auto?
    ----------------------------------------------------

    Aaron,

Oh I know you knew what it would be like. Quite the show of restraint and prioritizing - not getting one sooner.
I would not have been able to do that for the boot drive had I test driven one first. My ignorance was bliss and indifferent.
After adding the second one I'm now ruined for life - can't.live.without.

    Thanks for info about image.
