    I'm a cameraman/editor so I need the performance of the GPU while on location.

    Going to turn off C State and see what happens.

    Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

    No difference, as expected C state would only be CPU driven.

    I suspect its BIOS controlled which means I'm stuffed!

    Try OC tool like MSI afterburner or trixx.

    Yeah already tried, can OC on power but as soon as the mains is removed it drops to 135Mhz straight away.

    Hi,
    Not sure if it's helpful, but if you cant find an answer maybe you cant hook up your laptop to a car using a cigarrette lighter adapter (maybe using an inverter if you need one)? I've not tried this and hopefully you wont need to but maybe it could help if you're on location. :)

    Yeah I do have one and its very handy.

    This is just bugging me why the GPU would be forced to 135Mhz no matter what I am doing,will not go above this speed.

    What program are you using? Have you tried altering that to see if it makes any difference? Additionally, what about Nvidia's high performance driver, would that make a difference?

    Sorry which program? I use for Adobe Pr, After Effects and Media Encorder.

    Games are limited as well. On Mains F1 2012 runs 60fps Vsync'd and on Battery its around 20fps.

    Just tried the performance driver and said its not compatible or can't find the hardware.

    I'm on the beta driver 311.35 at the moment but tried many drivers and no difference, not sure its a driver probably because its instant clock down when the power is removed.

    I'm guessing its BIOS controlled.

    Alright.

    After embarking on the heatsink swap and getting my CPU temperature down a little, I decided to take a crack at overclocking the GPU.

    I have the NVIDIA Quadro K5000M. Another member of this board worked with me to modify the GPU BIOS to change the default clocks to be more like they are in the GeForce 680M. (The 680M is similar to the K5000M but for some reason NVIDIA decided to lower the clock rate on the K5000M. No matter, the Precision has a handy cooling solution that can take it.)

    Before and after

    [IMG] [IMG]

    3DMark (current version with no name)

    All tests run with default settings. Ran three times and picked the highest score. Optimus is enabled. Using NVIDIA 311.35 drivers.

    Ice Storm: 85294 -> 86104 (0.9% increase)
    Cloud Gate: 14295 -> 15032 (5.2% increase)
    Fire Strike: 3023 -> 3213 (6.3% increase)

    A decent incremental improvement.

    Max temp...
    65C with stock clock, 67C overclocked

    Scary

    I had to flash the GPU BIOS with Optimus disabled. After the flash, the system wouldn't boot. Talk about scary?

    I pulled the battery to reset the motherboard BIOS to defaults (which turned Optimus back on). After a reboot and reinstalling the drivers, I was back in business. However, I haven't tried turning Optimus off again yet.

    I've been asked not to release the GPU BIOS file at this time. However I've been jittered enough to not want to be the guinea pig anymore. I'll see if I can get a response from the guy who put the GPU BIOS together for me and see if we should post this for others. In any case, it's possible to overclock using software only as some of you already have.

    I am just curious, why did you decide to go the BIOS flash route? I suppose GPU flashing would be a better solution if you are using a non-Windows OS.

    Or if you want the changes to be permanent or unlock additional features originally locked. Now, I can't speak for the nVidia GPUs or firepros as I don't have first hand experience, but the MR5870 in my G73 uses a modded vBios that unlocks AMD overdrive and has extremely low clock speeds on battery compared to the stock vBios for longer battery life and the ability to use overdrive to overclock. Oh and it also fixed a GSOD issue specific to that laptop model.
