Nice to know that control point works on the M6600.

does anyone know where I can buy the piece of plastic that surrounds the keyboard

the one you have to pry open to install additional memory and get to the extra HDD bays

I broke mine getting into it on the day I bought my laptop new (it seems much harder to get into that my last Dell Workstation the M6500)

    Thanks
    Nathan

Exactly what I'm most afraid of. These laptop parts are extremely delicate and if you're not used to removing (or don't have the proper tools) you'll get into trouble.

Even worse, the sometimes difficulty and expense in getting them repaired/replaced. I'm sorry for your issue (at least it wasn't an expensive repair), but other that have more ambition than experience need to be warned to be careful.

The task may be simple, but it may take a bit of technique to accomplish. I hope you will agree this cannot be understated.

Yeah, the TRIM is one of the few delicate parts of the M6700. @ nathanm, call Dell's parts department. They should be able to find the part number and they actually don't seem to be overcharging for their parts.

    UPDATE: TRAY CANNOT BURN

After contacting Dell about the optical drives, I learned that the tray loader is a READ ONLY drive. (Oh crap.) The slot loader however is a READ and WRITE device.

Man alive, I wanted the reliability of the old tray loader, but I was counting on building a self-contained workstation that could also handle burning a data disc when needed.

I suppose I'll have to reconfigure my order with the sexy "Mac-like" slot device.

Should be able to find another brand to fit that bay that's tray and writeable.... Being read vs write has nothing to do with tray vs slot in the grand scheme of things....

I bought the tray loader DVD (yes, it is read-only) and then used the bezel on an aftermarket unit. See my post here on the UJ262 and UJ267.

Like others have said, you can get a tray drive that can write. I have a Blu-ray drive that can write (DVDs and BDs) that I installed myself. A DVD+/-RW would probably be quite cheap. Make sure you get an "ultra slim" 9.5mm drive, the larger 12.7mm ones will not fit.
