Same for me, the backlight was too convenient to ignore.

    Yes, the backlit version.

Don't really need it that often to tell you the truth, but on occasions when I do, its a godsend. The intensity adjustability just adds to that convenience.

Hi Bokeh. Were you able to find out if that is still the case with the HP using 8-bit hardware with their current 10-bit display laptops like the 8x70s?

Well I finally installed W8 and I have got to say that I see nothing compelling about it whatsoever.

Granted, it launches and closes a bit quicker but so far, that's it. Its change for the sake of change. Not because its does anything better.
Yes, but it doesn't stay on?

Leaning all this new stuff makes my head hurt.

The intensity stays the same, but you are right, the kb turns off after a few seconds and come back on when you resume using the mouse/trackpoint/kb. I think the Feature Enhancement Pack allows you to change that, but I haven't installed it. FEP's predecessor on the M6600, certainly allowed you to change the led off timer for the keyboard.

Well I checked and can't find anything to make those adjustments for backlight on time.

The FEP merely tells how to turn the backlight feature on and adjust the intensity. There doesn't appear to be an adjustment for how long it stays on or an "always" on position. That operation is a bit particular, don't you think?

Well now, that is better isn't it. You get to choose from a list of presets from 1 sec.- 5 mins.

Still, there is no "always on" option, which I feel should be a users choice...not the factory's.
