Just a word about glossy. First, it doesn't really bother me since these are the predominate screens we see all our lives anyway. Nevertheless, has anyone invested in a screen cover to reduce the reflection? Can we get a side-by-side?

Anyway, I'd never do something like that since it would be like moving two steps forward and then one step backwards while paying for it. Just save money and order the lesser matte screen.

I think of it like needing 10 times the power to double your speed. But at the same time, you also quadruple the drag. There's just no way around these laws.

If that analogy confuses you, it does me too. I'm sick, so maybe I should just go to bed? Wait, its too early to go to bed.

Bokeh has the covet and still has or had a regular M6700 so he'd be able to provide you guys with a good idea of how glossy the gorilla glass makes the display.

    That is correct.

The UPS Track & Trace link is now working and it says that the shipping order was placed on December 28th. The actual shipping (= exit scan) from Shanghai, China was today (December 30th). Delivery date is December 31st.

I can tell you that, based on my Macbook Pro 2011 with no glossy screen (and I really hate glossy screens in general), I'm happily surprised with it. The Covet screen is bright enough to deal with any lights I have in my office.

Got the new screen today and it's much better..... my explorer windows actually look white on both sides of the screen now. After calibrated, things are looking good.

Overall, pretty happy with the outcome. Dell was responsive and helped me promptly, exchanged my screen without any hassle ( except for sending an email with a picture of the problem).

    Update:

UPS didn't make the delivery yesterday (December 31st). Although the Track & Trace info isn't updated yet, I expect the M6700 to be delivered on January 2nd.

This will be my third M6700 since I first ordered one on September 18th. After 3 and a half months of waiting and contacting Dell Customer Care and Tech Support, I hope the third time's the charm for me.

A couple of things about the battery slice.

It is smaller than I was expecting. It raises up the back of the machine when sitting on a table. You can still type on it with no issues. You can still use the machine on your lap since the slice does not go all the way across. Having the slice attached means that you can use the machine on a soft surfaces without blocking air vents.

The battery has a charging plug and light. You can charge it with a 90/130/210/240 watt adapter. Have not tried a 65. The light is solid as it charges and blinks when full.

In the BIOS, you get the option of enabling Express Charge on the slice just like on the regular battery.

Running, it looks like it only discharges one battery at a time. I will need to test this with a heavy load. It also charges one battery at a time.

The Slice is discharged first, then the onboard battery. The onboard battery is charged first, then the slice. The idea is that if you had to remove the slice and only use the system, then the onboard battery would have the most chance of being fully charged.

You can pull the onboard battery or slice while the system is unplugged without any issues. This means on slice you can swap batteries, or on battery, swap the slice. The system will keep running with no interruptions.

Runtime with the slice and battery on a NON-Optimus system is 8-9 hours.

Runtime with the slice on an Optimus system will be 16-20+ hours.

    how about the display?...

really debating the covet with the IPS display vs the regular with the 3D package here... I dont do any CAD or graphic work, mainly for just a high end computer movies, internet, excel, unix work and such here...love the red look of the covet though...3D would be cool but dunno how often id use it really... but interested in comparission of the displays for that and the IPS on the Covet...

other than the display i do wonder why the fingerprint option can be higher on the regular model than what is offered on the covet too... Do you know if they look different at all in anyway?...the FIPS high end one in the regular M6700 and the lower end option of 'internal swipe' thats only offered on the Covet model...
