Dell Precision M4800 - Can GPU be upgraded?

I Just upgraded my m4800 with a Quadro m2200, i was ready to do all the inf modding to install the drivers, but for some reason the upgrade was plug and play, when i booted the system after installing the GPU it was just a normal boot and the drivers worked perfect without any mod, is that how it works? it was so easy that i can't help but think that perhaps i did something wrong lol

 

haha I hear ya, I was also readying up for battle of mods, drivers, ect, ect, but after a few small adjustments and correct order of installation (I did try drivers from newer precision models) it worked.

it does feel good. now hard part is to use it to its full potential before main chip gets age ticket.

could you report result of 3D MARK time spy? mine currently stands as 1670 vs k2100 was around 500 only

I just runed Time Spy, got 1858, not bad i guess, now i really wanna know if there isn't a more powerful GPU to upgrade lol, someone at the Dell forum just told me that i could roll the dice and try some of the newer pascal or turing HP GPUs since the new HP nvidia cards don't have the VBios on the mxm unit, nobody has tried that yet?

 

Pascal GPUs have a vBIOS problem in these systems and are not likely to work.
Turing GPUs might work... if you can actually find one. Someone took a HP Quadro RTX 3000 and slapped it into a Precision M6700 and it worked without any hassle. Problem is that the card layout is different so a mod to the heatsink was necessary.
(Also, both Pascal and Turing GPUs do not support LVDS, so you'd need a M4800 with eDP display, or otherwise you would be able to run with Optimus enabled only.)

 

I can only hope that someone releases a MXM 3.0 Type A RTX GPU then, seems unlikely tho lol, as far as i know the most powerful Type A MXM GPU would be the m2200 right?

 

China guys have GTX 1650 in MXM Type A format. And it works. I saw only HP 8570W with 1650. But price - 400$ for 1650 seems too high.
And who will release MXM Type A card (Like 3050, 1750 Ti, etc)?
Clevo? - No, they just dont need this card. They use Type B even in 15.6 machines (Why Dell doesn't used Type B in M4800??(()
Dell? - No, they using their proprietary DGFF port.
HP? - Maybe, but what cost of the card will be?

 

Just to be extra sure if I go down the route of the WX 4150 for my M4800 will I need to buy a Dell version of it or can I use any without having to flash it? Also which screens are lvds and edp because I've got the 1080p ips display on mine will it be compatible with it? Has the fan control method been fixed or will I need to do some manual tweaking. Excuse the stupid question I just dont want to waste time and money if this doesnt work, this is the card on ebay

Please, re-read my post. But, answering your questions:
1) If buy Dell (Green Card) - no need to flash, if HP (Blue one) - you need to flash it. But cheapest programmer CH341A for 5$ saves double of cost of Dell Card.
2) All screens support, but you should use compatible drivers. For your configuration this will be any driver.
3) Fan operates normally, you dont need extra software.
4) If you had AMD Card, you dont need a shim. If you had NVIDIA Card - just buy a heatsink with AT0W10060AL, DP / N = 0C7KH5.

In your case - yes.
Intel HD disabled by default if you have QHD/UHD (3K/4K) Screen or if you choose in BIOS: Unchecked Switchable Graphics.
If you have M5100 - there will be no problem with heatsink.
