Dell Precision M4800 - Can GPU be upgraded?

Boris stop jacking information I provide and re-posting as if it was yours without due credit, it does not suit you well.

 

I have all 3 boards and tested them all.


if you have nvidia 1100m you don't need shim (the k1100m sink is also raised)
if you have AMD 5100m you don't need shim (but may need better pads)
if you have nvidia 2100m you can use my solution of placing IHS from older chip (silver coated copper alloy)

best bet to have optimus enabled laptop where you can use both integrated and dedicated GPUS chips is...... EDP board

LVDS boards will only work (correctly mentioned by Arron) as optimus enabled (switchable graphics ON in BIOS) meaning when you are of the Docking station, you can only use HYBRID GRAPHICS.

thanks mate its almost on par, as prices go down I will try a higher card.

the only reason I am staying with this system is socketed non BGA chips. BGA soldered GPUs and CPUs is the worst idea for buyers and long time users, especially after when they abolished using lead in soldering. contacts are bound to go bad in 2 years if you move your laptop around...

Your post is hard to read, and your cool "modification" of stock heatsink with a copper head from an old CPU is good, but not for safety.
And what I recommend is safe and cheap to buy.

And not everyone have 768p or 1080p display, someone have 3K/4K display (Like me), and on this boards you cant have Optimus enabled due to iGPU, which cant support displays over 1080p.

And what kind of information I'm jacking, which is yours?

 

Hello Tyrell what thermal pads and thickness would you recommend? If there is a noticeable difference in temps I will look into it.

Also apparently the WX is equivalent to the RX 460 and you can unlock the shaders on it from 896 to 1024. Is this possible on the mobile chips? If so it could cement itself as the fastest possible GPU on the M4800 for a while.

 

1) There is no noticeable difference in thermal pads thickness, but if you use pads under 1.5mm some components will not have proper contact with heatsink.
2) Unfortunately, mobile WX4150 (Which is a RX460) uses slightly different GPU, which doesn't have locked shaders. Desktop RX460 uses 216-0896088 chip, mobile WX4150 uses chip 216-0896288.

 

I was just doing an ebay search and found some Nvidia GTX 1050 in MXM type A for sale, and they were cheaper than my M2200, has someone tried these out yet?

 

Pascal cards do not work well with M4700/M6700/M4800/M6800 because of a BIOS/vBIOS conflict. In M4800/M6800 you can expect to get BSOD at boot, no way around it without some pretty extreme work. (Works with Linux though.) On some Quadro cards you can workaround the issues by installing an early engineering sample vBIOS; we don't have any such images for GeForce cards though.

Hello all, after a very long wait my WX 4150 arrived from china and installation went well. Ran 3dmark06 as I had no time for anything else and I got a score of 28520 compared to 19096 with the original Firepro M5100. Has anybody had any luck installing the radeon gaming drivers? The adrenalin package did not work and I'm stuck with the Pro Enterprise drivers which are quite limited.

EDIT: More benchmarks: (cpu is i7 4910mq)

COD Warzone: Runs perfectly at 1080p 95% render resolution at 60-70fps with a mix of low and normal settings

CSGO: Maxed out at 1080p 120+ fps in a casual dust2 match except for texture filtering at bilinear (strange glitch where it drops like 30fps when set to 16x, same thing happened on the m5100). Game is super bloated these days and on my main rig with a gtx 1080 i sometimes see drops to 130fps lol. Would most likely run better at lower settings.

 

Hello everyone, i just installed my WX4150 into my M4800 (after the card sat in its bag for a few months), the card doesn't appear to work, giving me a code 43 when i have installed the latest drivers, and gibberish data for power usage and clock speeds in GPU-Z. Is there any way to fix this? or an i screwed?

(M4800 with the 1080p IPS eDP panel and on bios version A25)
