Thanks, but yeah, believe me, I have tried that, registry hacks, re-installs, reboots...pretty much every solution know to man and I am still seeing this issue. One person said enabling USB debugging in the BIOS worked for him, but I don't want to kill my USB 3.0 functionality, and either way, I tried that long ago and I am still having issues.

I just wanted to add that I believe when I enabled USB Debugging the first time I was still using the skinny USB cable. I just enabled USB Debugging again and connected my devices with the thicker USB cable, and so far everything is working perfectly. I even rebooted a few times and disconnected/reconnected my devices to all of my available USB ports, and so far everything is still good.

I am not willing to call this a permanent solution yet, but I am getting better results for sure. It would really suck to have to be stuck with USB 2.0 functionality for good, but I just can't find a slim mobile workstation PC with all of the features that the M3800 has (e.g. 3K/4K screen, K1100M or better, serviceable touchpad, etc...). I lived the M6600 and M4700 life for years, and while they are great machines, I don't intend on going back down that road again.

EDIT: Good thing I didn't declare the above a permanent solution, because it is not. My phone is back to having connection issues even with USB Debugging turned on. It COULD be the cable, but this is the exact same cable that worked with my other device flawlessly earlier today. At this point I am about ready to give up. I just wish I knew for sure if this was a 100% Dell or 100% Windows 8 issue so that I knew which direction to head in.

Illustrator, I am pretty much in the same boat. I have also previously posted in other threads when I was trying to diagnose the USB issue. I want to say its a Windows 8 issue, but I don't have another Windows 8 computer to really confirm. I've decided that I'm just going to live with it since I have another Windows 7 laptop that can reliably connect my iPhone and sync. Just about everything else works reliably on my M3800, so I don't want to risk a system exchange or blowing away Win 8 and reinstalling Win 7 just to test the USB issue. There are so many other things that can go wrong by trying to fix one thing with these machines. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yup. We are in the exact same boat for sure. I want to say it's a Windows 8 issue as well, but am testing things on another another Windows 8 PC and I am not getting the constant disconnecting and reconnecting that I am on my Precision M3800. HOWEVER, my phone is still not showing as being mounted properly, as when I go to "eject" the phone I am getting nothing but dots instead of the device name (same as on my Precision M3800). I am really leaning towards this being the same Windows 8 issue that I have researched that apparently still hasn't been patched properly.

All of the other PCs in my household are all Windows 8 machines, so my choice is to either live with this issue or go back to Windows 7, which I am almost positive will fix the issue.

Does anyone have experience on living the HiDPI life in Windows 7? Is the experience comparable to Windows 8? Better? Worse?

I don't know how helpful this is, but I haven't run into this problem with my M4800 running Win 8.1.

Following up on this: a simple power adapter swap solved the problem completely. The new adapter is 100% silent compared to the noisy one before. I feel that it has slightly improved on my coil whine issue as well. Very pleased with this outcome.

Huh, now that's interesting. Thanks for the information! I still have a few weeks left to decide whether or not I am keeping this machine for good. I really want to keep my M3800, but if this is an issue strictly isolated to Dell, then I may have to look at an HP ZBook 15 or something like that...even though I will absolutely dread having a machine of that weight.
