One more thought: will it boot without the internal battery? If so, maybe reassemble without it and run off AC and see if that makes the touchpad issue go away?

I can say with 100% certainty that the issue is NOT there until I screw the bottom cover on. I test the touchpad without the cover and it works perfectly fine until I screw that bottom cover on. Maybe the battery is swelling just a bit, and putting that cover on and screwing it down is causing the friction with my touchpad.

I wonder if Dell RMA's batteries? My system is still covered under the warranty, but I wonder if the battery is a part of that, especially since the swelling is bound to be fairly minor, but still enough to cause an issue for me...

 

While the nominal battery warranty is often 12 months, I would argue that the warranty is for loss of capacity which affects battery usability and not for manufacturing defects which affect the usability of the computer. Speak to Dell, explain the problem (touchpad buttons), what your research indicates to be the likely cause (swelling battery) and ask what they will do. I would also be concerned that a swelling battery could be the start of something worse (think Galaxy Note 7).

I believe John's correct on several points. The battery is usually covered for a year, and I share the concerns that you want to stop using the battery ASAP if it is swelling.

So I know I'm 2 months late, but I just wanted to report back on my battery/touchpad issue. My battery was indeed swollen, so bad in fact that it was literally making the left side of the touchpad protrude upwards from the case. This is 100% inexcusable on Dell's part, and of course they refused to cover it. I could care less about the LIFE of the battery, but this thing was literally a danger to me. I had kind of blown off the issue because I rarely use my PC undocked, and because Dell no longer stocks these batteries, but recently something told me to check again and see if the battery was indeed he problem, and low-and-behold the battery was swollen beyond belief.

I ended up having to ebay a battery for my PC and I hope this thing doesn't do the same thing. I honestly think my original battery was a bit swollen from the start, because the touchpad has NEVER felt this good or loose, even when my PC was brand new. Either way, crisis averted and thanks again to all of the great help here on the forums!
