Because I don't like Macs. And putting a Dell logo on one won't make it any more attractive to me.
Point taken. We shall wait and see.

Why would there be ANY animosity related to any consumer good. If it doesn't meet your needs, don't buy it.

There has to be a tradeoff. If you want thin and relatively light, you aren't going to get space for 2 or 3 hard drives, 4 sticks of ram, a dock connector etc. They made room for a professional graphics card, which is more important to some. One would think that professionals would understand design constraints. You simply can't put 10 gallons of stuff into a 5 gallon bucket.

If you don't like this one, but a m4700 or wait for the m4800 and deal with the extra size and weight.

This interests me because I might be able to do cad work on the go with a 4.5lb machine as opposed to a 6lb machine that I haul home every day.

So, because YOU don't like Macs you will just bash anything that resembles them? That's very helpful and thoughtful, thanks! :)

I am looking for a 15" Windows laptop with Haswell, a minimum of 16GB RAM, with a high-resolution touch-enabled display, professional GPU (preferably ISV-certified), under 5 lbs. I carry it every day, so the weight is very important. Don't really care how it looks. So far, the m3800 is the only choice I could find. And it perfectly fits my needs. I wish I could order it today!

If I were to take a guess, it will come configured to full resolution, but with DPI set to 200% (available in Windows 8.1). ;)
I think this will be the best choice for most of us, as long as the the software we use supports 200% DPI.

That's what being a consumer means: You don't have to like a product and you get to say so. The person that pays for a product gets to have that prerogative. Never forget that.

Sometimes its that simple. But I came to Dell because its the opposite of what a Mac is. Remember, if you're not giving the consumers what they want, then you won't be in business for long. If I wanted a Mac, I would have bought a Mac.

this notebooks screams xps, if they resembled the latitude Z... or better yet the adamo 13, those 2 scream professional and still have a very good and kind of unique design language.

aside that I dont like the dgpu, I dont like USB3 docks, give it thunderbolt and be dome with it

I was hoping to merge my vaio SB and precious 4600 into one.I can live with touchscreen and the clumsy design. Nothing that I care about. But the gpu and 16gb ram worries me. Biggest worry being the space for a secondary msata drive. Pretty useless without one. Unless they have a thunderbolt.

    From Dell's own website:
    Latitude - Professional class laptops
Dell Precision - Mobile advanced applications

The Precision line if for professionals and non-professionals who use applications which benefit from ISV certification, application specific hardware (i.e. Quadro) and customers who need a stable, validated hardware platform.

Probably not from Dell, but the M3800 is pretty close since they are using the lowest wattage 4 core Haswell currently available with a Quadro M in a 82 watts total package.
They are probably on their limit for thermal power design in this form factor.

Relatively small market & specialized product, and some corporate IT departments mandate purchasing from particular brands.
For work, the Precision M line is the only viable portable workstation option available to us.
The 16GB limit is the one thing I would find very difficult to work around and will likely prevent us from trying one out.
The others (lack of Ethernet, relatively weak GPU, glossy screen, dock options, etc.) I would find work-around solutions since the lower bulk and weight would be great to have.

I have no animosity towards the M3800, but I do express disappointment in some of its limitations in hope that future derivatives (M3900?) do become viable.

So release date on September or late November?

Been hearing rumours that M3800 and M6800 will be released around late November.
But Tweakers said September. Hope Tweakers is right.. can't get my hands on one asap!

I hope 1TB SSD will be supported in the m3800, either as an option from Dell, or at least as a self-install.
Crucial has one already and Samsung has just announced its 840 EVO: should be available by the time this laptop ships. Both are under $600.
