How about this related discussion? The other place to look for guidance is the XPS forum as they are active hardware modifiers (and the XPS15 9550 is basically the same as the Precision 5510) although I can't quickly see a relevant thread - you might need to go back a few months.

Thank you so much for the link. The downloads available over there are all that I have already found elsewhere but their discussions sure gave me a lead to follow up on! With any luck I should have an answer sooner rather than later.

    On another note;

Does anyone recall which Dell application enabled the Function Key on screen notifications in windows 7 for the 5510?

I swear I once installed one of the applications that come along with the drivers from Dell and from then on the on screen notifications for the FN keys like the volume, mute, play, stop and etc. showed up when you were using them. But no matter how hard I think I don't seems to remember which application it was!

Is it the Dell Foundation Services? The description says "This application provides foundational services facilitating customer serviceability, messaging and support functions."

Actually that is exactly what I thought after reading the description, but it is not it.

Google found this. Does it work on the 5510?

    Thanks John,

This link actually works after installation but:

    1. It is not what I remember making work on my laptop the last time when I installed Windows 7 on my newly bought 5510
    2. it is so black, bulky, with massive bezels and 2014 looking as opposed to the minimalist white hue version that came with the 5510 originally.
    Thank you again.

Maybe someone can help me with my sleep mode recovery issues!
    My scenario is as follows
I use both in home and office D3100 dock station to connect all USB 2.0/3.0 devices to the laptop.
Now when laptop stays with plugged-in AC cord and for example I put it to sleep mode for a night, I can wake it with simply press on external mouse/keyboard button (Wake on AC/ Wake on USB in BIOS as ON)

The problem is when I put the laptop to sleep. Unplug all cables, pack it to the bag and plug it again in the office to AC and another D3100 dock station controlling mouse/keyboard. It won't automatically wake up (Wake on AC is ON!) and pressing buttons on keyboard/mouse don't do a thing either.

Summing up, in order to have sleep mode working correctly I can't unplug the AC and if I do, in order to wake the laptop I need to use its power button.

Any idea what is causing that?

    Hi guys - quick question.
Helping colleague to find a laptop. They currently use a 1.63kg E7440. It's important to be responsive (loads of tabs), fast, etc - we tested out a fully loaded Precision 7510 (64GB RAM, i7, etc) @ 2.9kg. It was too heavy for their usage (I'm also looking at HP ZBook 15U with 6500U @1.89kg - we can find them one with 32GB RAM, though that's not as much of an upgrade in terms of processor?)

Would 5510 be the next logical machine to look at? (are there any better options?)

    Thanks,

The 5520 is the current model. You can get them with full 45W quad-core i7 or XEON mobile processors. You can also do 32GB of RAM.

I've got an E7450 and the 5510. While the latter is 15.6" it isn't much larger then the 14" Latitude due to the thin display bezels. However, unless the 15.6" display is an attraction, you might want to also look at the Latitude 5480 which is available with quad core CPU and supports up to 32GB RAM but lacks a dGPU. The Latitude keyboard also has a bit more travel and the useful dedicated PgUp / PgDn keys.
