Thank you for confirming that the touchpad supports 3 finger taps. I got it working this morning thanks to hints from another post that said that you should not necessarily change the properties for the one named "Synaptics".

I had the following touchpads listed and it turned out that I needed to change the properties for id 11, not id 14.

    DLL06E5:01 06CB:7A13 Touchpad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
    SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=14 [slave pointer (2)]

To accomplish what I mentioned earlier:

    Code:
    # Make 3 finger tap send "middle mouse button" (default value: 2 3 0 0 1 3 0)
    xinput set-prop 11 "Synaptics Tap Action" 2 3 0 0 1 3 2

    # Make 3 finger click send "middle mouse button" (default value: 1 3 0)
    xinput set-prop 11 "Synaptics Click Action" 1 3 2
Once I figured that out, I decided to instead reconfigure it to make 2 finger tap the middle mouse button, 3 finger tap be the right mouse button as I am more likely to just tap or click the lower right corner when I want to right click. I also made similar changes to multi-finger clicks.

After trying multiple ways of making the changes persistent without success, I just created a shell script that I configure to run at startup.

    Code:
    #!/bin/bash

    # Make 2 finger tap send middle mouse button
    # and 3 finger tap send right mouse button
    # (default value: 2 3 0 0 1 3 0)
    xinput set-prop 11 "Synaptics Tap Action" 2 3 0 0 1 2 3

    # Make 3 finger click send middle mouse button
    # and 3 finger click send right mouse button
    # (default value: 1 3 0)
    xinput set-prop 11 "Synaptics Click Action" 1 2 3

For Windows there is a registry key flag that you can set to prevent the options from the control panel to override manual registry edits on reboot. Maybe there is a similar flag in the Linux version.

I've found no mention of one. Some posts say that you should be able to set it in your Xorg config but I didn't want to mess around with that one. The other methods people mentioned didn't work but it doesn't matter that much. My script takes care of it and it works without issues so far.

Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

Last year, I got a 5510 with a SATA SSD and Windows 10. I described earlier in this thread how I was able to install Windows 7. Since then, I've returned the 5510 and bought a new one with an NVME SSD and Ubuntu 14.04. Because of what's needed at work, I've switched the newer 5510 to Windows 7.

I was actually successful in installing WIndows 7 -- I slipstreamed updates and drivers via DISM onto a Windows 7 ISO. My question is this: anyone here with a 5510 and a Samsung 950 Pro, running Windows 7? Does the 950 Pro appear under Samsung Magician?

My understanding is that, in order to run Samsung Magician, you have to be in AHCI mode and load Samsung's drivers for the 950 Pro. I'm in AHCI mode and I had slipstreamed Samsung's driver onto the ISO before installing. And yet, when I run Samsung Magician, it can see the drive, but I get a "This drive is not supported" message, so I cannot do anything with the drive.

A related question would be, do I even need Samsung Magician? I thought that you need it if you want to perform TRIM on demand. If I don't need Samsung Magician, I'll just change to RAID mode, use the Intel RST driver, and be done with it.

You don't need Samsung Magician to have TRIM work. TRIM is supported natively by the OS as long as your disk controller supports it. You only need it to perform maintenance operations on the drive, check status, or do firmware updates. (I don't have it installed on either of my systems, and I don't think it is a big deal... Also a note, Windows 8/10 are better about doing periodic SSD maintenance than Windows 7.)

Has anyone looked into installing the palm rest with the fingerprint sensor for the new XPS 15 9560?
    1. I know the 9550 and the 5520 share the same part number for the palm rest. Is the palm rest for the newer models physically identical to the older models?
    2. Does the fingerprint sensor communicate over the existing keyboard or touchpad wiring harness, or has a new connector been added to the motherboard?
    3. Anyone know the part number of the new fingerprint reader palm rest?
Does dell sell replacement parts directly? I think I may have come across a dell website for that at some point, but now I can't find anything beyond simple RAM and HD upgrades.

Anyone have a recommendation for a third party vendor for OEM Dell parts?

Can't say about the Precision 5520, but on larger models (7510/7710 and older generation models), the fingerprint reader is a separate USB device and it has a separate connector to the motherboard. I don't think that it will be possible to outfit a 5510 (or old XPS model) with the fingerprint reader by grabbing a part from the newer model.

    (Sorry for bad English)

Hi, has anyone heard a little sound when turning or shaking the machine (completely turned off)? Sounds like a small object inside. Just find out today and I'm pretty nervous. Can't find anything similar on Google yet and my version only has one SSD, so it's not the sound of the HDD.

We have five 5510's at my office and I have done a lot of work with them. There definitely has never been a rattle sound when they are moved around. So, I can't speculate as to what it could be. If you have a small torx screwdriver, you could try removing the bottom cover and seeing if anything falls out...
