I think that Dell might have built in a time-over-threshold rule into the fan operation so that short bursts of CPU activity don't cause the fan to come on and then quickly go off gain. There needs to be a significant time at well over 60C to get the fan to run but, once it has come on, it stays on for some time. However, there are reports of the E5570 getting quite hot underneath under certain conditions such as playing video where the temperature is insufficient to turn the fan on and the overall operation might benefit from the introduction of a slower fan speed starting at a lower temperature just to stop the bottom of the computer from getting so warm.

Hey does anyone has information showing if E5570 can accommodate up to 32gb RAM?

    • Up to 32GB2 DDR4 at 2133Mhz - 2 DIMMS
sister model E5470 supports 32GB too, so I don't expect any issues.

2133mhz DIMMs are fine - there are 2400mhz DIMMs, but higher CAS latency (for the ones I've see available), so not worth going for 2400mhz (and don't know if laptop would support 2400mhz anyways)

I would try the Kingston HyperX 2400MHz. I'm sure I've seen comments that if you have a quad core CPU then they will run at full speed plus the CL is 14 so a little faster than the CL15 stock RAM in my E5570. If you don't have a quad core CPU then the RAM will probably be CL15 at 2133MHz.

I've now got some direct experience of the hot bottom problem when in laptop mode and can confirm that the computer can get uncomfortably warm under certain conditions. The hottest place on the bottom is usually the fan area, which rests on the left thigh. The coolest configuration is to sit cross-legged which supports the computer in the middle, but this isn't a very stable arrangement.

Hey John, now that I have rounded up my hunt during the recent Computex event on upcoming laptops, pretty much sure I'm going to buy E5570. Just one thing that REALLY troubles me is the heat output. My current laptop produces so much heat on the keyboard and palm rest, it makes the whole typing experience really uncomfortable, even on idle usage like web browsing, Excel and Youtube under 15 minutes time! I won't be using heavy application on my lap but for those web browsing session I will, since the battery life is fairly doable for those tasks or else no point buying this laptop.

Just wondering if the E5570 can handle these easy tasks and still manage to displace heat efficient enough? Thanks.

Sounds like a ULV config suits your needs better. E5470 is reported to hold its temperature just fine with ULV CPU, so I can't imagine E5570 doing worse. Couple that with E5570's 82 WHr battery and you can roll all day all night...

Oh, I guess I have forgotten to mention that I need a quad-core for my needs. So does it fare well with this configuration?

    windows?

You have more control over the power options (optimized, high performance, light &cool etc), might give you less heat when you are using it on your lap

Can't speak to this, using Ubuntu. I can force the fan to run and dissipate the heat too (overriding the bios settings)

The E5470 gets hot, but it's manageable. It's a little bit slower than the 45W configuration on the M5510, but still quite a bit faster than the older 37W (i7-4712HQ) in my prior M3800.
