No, it's unlikely you will notice, unless you run a lot of programs at the same time or run RAM hogs like Adobe CS Suite or something. I have 2GB in my D430 and it never mattered. I also have it in the NC10 with Vista Ultimate and it has been fine.

You should be OK. and you can always add it later if you need it.

Can anybody tell me if it is easy to upgrade the e4200?
    I'm getting
    2.0GB, DDR3 SDRAM, 2 DIMMs (1.0GB Integrated) for Latitude E4200
    Thanks,
    Jane

I am gonna go out on a limb here and assume that you are referring to upgrading the RAM. ;) If you are getting 2GB with two DIMMs, then you will have to replace the existing 1GB DIMM in the sole available socket with a 2GB DIMM to upgrade the RAM to 3GB. However, I think it is unnecessary (see my post above) unless you really need it.

    My thoughts :)

    • Pros
    • Colour is SUPERB - I really love the blue
    • amazingly light!
    • runs Vista really well
    • backlit keyboard is a must if you can get one!

      Cons
    • the cover collects fingerprints for fun - constantly cleaning it!
    • does feel a little fragile
    • Gets warm and a fair amount of fan noise

all in all, very happy, a little concerned about the heat (especially after having a M1330)

The fan noise is incessant, as I have said many times, it kills what I feel is otherwise a splendid machine. I don't think it feels fragile at all, I think it's pretty robust, in fact. Dropped it from two feet high on carpeted floor and Vista didn't even blink :|

    Looking forward to the pics!

Oh thanks all for your help information. It is scheduled to come Wednesday but will unavailable to pick up so Thursday it will be.

My only worry is the fan noise... I tend to hate that.. my 1530 with ssd
    is very quiet.
What was the problem with the 1330 xpx?? Hubby has one. Thanks Janie

speaking of ram, I notice that the outlet E4200s with 2 or 3 gb of ram pre-configured seem to show this 2 or 3gb in 1 DIMM. Is it a typo or do these pre-configured ones actually come with >1gb of ram soldered onto the mainboard?

exact words in the "view details" specifications page for a 2gb-ram one at the outlet:
    "2 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz (1 DIMM)"

It's the NVidia card and it's overheating issues - loads about it over in the XPS forum :)

    Hi everyone,

I changed my old Dell X1 for an E4200, which I have now been using for 3 months. I'm globally satisfied - screen, performance, and weight are similar or better than my old X1. But:
    1) I was hoping for a better autonomy (Dell introduced the E-series claiming some of them could last for ... 19 hours. I just get 5+ hours, which is fine but does not make it for a full working day).
    2) the Keyboard (standard) is bigger than on the X1 and confortable, but it is quite louder: it's embarrassing to type on it while attending a conference. Question: could anyone having tried both keyboards tell me whether the backlight keyboard is less noisy?
    3) And there is also - of course - this fan noise issue. The X1 was fanless, and it's clear that they could have made this computer fanless too - six years after the X1!

Here is my contribution to this last topic: for some reason, the fan on my laptop stopped working entirely around the beginning of february. I enjoyed 6 weeks of complete silence, with the fan NEVER running, using the laptop about 5-8 hours a day. It never got very hot either - as far as I remember, the fanless X1 was typically a littler hotter than the E4200 during that blessed 6 week period. Unfortunately, the fan started running again last week.

The bottom line is this: the laptop really doesn't need a fan at all, at least for a basic everyday use! So if anyone knows how too just turn the fan completely off - like removing it physically from the computer, I'd be glad to ear about it.

As I said, I don't really know how I managed back in february to turn the fan off. I should however say that I had already tried to modify some config files to obtain such a result, with absolutely no hint that the modifications where actually working. When I noticed that the fan was not running anymore, I more or less assumed that some of these modifications had finally been taken into account after a subsequent reboot. But then why did it start again last week? Perhaps some automatic update erased them?
