Dell Latitude 7490

The keyboard on the first and second (yes second) replacement were much better. Got another replacement after my first one would crash consistently when plugged into a TB16. All I did was move the SSD from my first machine to the first replacement. Off the TB16 it was fine. Second replacement moved the SSD again and no issues.

Considering it took 7-10 business days each time for a replacement, I think I would have just had them replace the bad part next time. I guess I was just upset that my brand new $2,000 laptop wasn't perfect out of the box.

If I 'mash' my right index finger on the reader, it works 95% of the time. I use my fingerprint for my password manager and I use it 20-25 times a day. Only fails once in a while.

Why they don't use the reader from the XPS 13 is beyond me. That one is instant and reliable as anything.

 

My best guess - different ODMs in Taiwan. XPS 13 is Compal, iirc. Quanta is another big one.

 

Hey can you help me out with your INF file need to get windows 7 running on these machines and the touchpad is the last thing I cant get to work.

 

Snagged a 7490 from the outlet and it delivered today. Went with the i5 8350/16gb/256 nvm-e class 40 ssd/FHD regular non-touch. I expected the bezel to be too big for me but I'm pleasantly surprised / not as bad as I'd thought it would be.

Updated to latest drivers and bios easily. Looking at the specs, my SSD appears to be the Toshiba XG5 which is fine by me. LCD is CMN14D3 which appears to be Innolux. After - several - defective X1 Carbon 6th gens with AUO screens and faulty clickpad buttons, this Dell is a breath of fresh air. Perfect screen in every way and the entire laptop looks brand new. No issues with keyboard although the space bar is a bit louder than all other keys. I actually like the "trackpoint" on this Dell better than the X1 Carbons. For some reason scrolling PDFs using the middle button on the X1C gave me problems where portions of the PDF wouldn't scroll. No issues at all with the 7490, touchpad is perfect for me so far. Appreciate the added buttons below the touchpad as well. Overall you'd never know the laptop is a refurb. Very pleased so far.

Does anybody know what the performance differences are between the "Intel® Dual-Band Wireless-AC 8265 Wi-Fi + BT 4.2 Wireless Card (2x2), SAR" and the non-SAR adapter? Dell rep doesn't even know. I'm curious if it's just a power setting or if the antennas are actually different.

The SAR option is the only one if you want the ircam.

 

I have no clue, I was just researching that earlier. Intel is completely empty on that info, and the SAR card needs the "narrow bezels" option (which means the magnesium back panel is not selectable). Apparently the previous gen 7480 and 5480 had the option, too.

 

Also, what's up with the Super Lower Power (SLP) panels? Are they just as good as the regular ones (in terms of a picture quality)?

 

There haven't been any concrete tests, but someone starting on page 5 of this thread has one.

 

That would be funny. Mine does not have the fingerprint reader though. Thanks to this thread, I didn't waste my time ordering one with that! I would never use it anyway. I'm just relieved to have gotten a screen not made by AUO.
