    Guys,

I sent the Michael Dell an email directly with regard to cack service and i highlighted my case. I had a laptop for 6 months before i realized how wrong my build was and when i contacted tech support was informed i had bust my 7 day return time. It in turn was passed to the lady below who completely sorted my situation. Drop her a mail and i am sure she will point you in the right direction, if not fix it for you...

I just scheduled the laptop to be returned. of course, delivery costs will be covered by dell.
My ego forced me to return the laptop even though I know I won't get a better deal.

I just ordered a 1710 for my best friend, with similar specs to the OP's... the only card they offered here in the US was the GS.
It will be in next week, and I will reinstall XP as soon as I complete the function check (screen, sound, HDD).

    Review to follow...

Seriousley m8. Contact that lady and i am confident she will sort something for you. I sent my mail to Michael Dell and he in turn passed it onto her. Michael Dell has only just returned to dell due to the poor rep it is now obtaining. He built the company from the ground up and then sold it on. The new board of directors seem to have messed things up, so he was taken back on in a consultant role to stop the Dell ship from sinking. Your points are valid and i know he or his team including Ami will resolve it for your to your satisfaction. The common problem most companies find, is the people that can make the right desccisions are often never consulted.

GIve it a go, what you got to loose :)

I also purchased a Vostro 1710 with the 8600M GT card and recieved the GS card. I decided to live with it seeing as it still runs what I want it to fine... until the GPU started over heating and giving me constant lock ups. Here are some of the temperatures I was getting:

Fans forced to high. This caused so much slowdown on the laptop it became unuseable.

And temperatures after 20 to 30 minutes of running World of Warcraft.

I've got an engineer due out to my work place tomorrow so hopefully the issue will be resolved. Input seems to suggest the heat sink isn't in properly.

Completely replaced motherboard and the 8600M GS on it - temperatures still at 115c after 3 minutes of a graphic simulation, 80c at rest. Informed Dell that I am looking for a refund both by mouth and in writing.

Waiting to hear back from them.

    Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying either this or the Samsung R700 laptop in the UK.

Has anyone experienced any problems in the UK? I've had desktops from dell and their support has always been good (not that i've had any problems!)

    Cheers

    Matt
